Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness

9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan^(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,^(B) with large cities^(C) that have walls up to the sky.^{(D) 2} The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”^{(E) 3} But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you^(F) like a devouring fire.^(G) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,^(H) as the Lord has promised you.

²⁷ “I will send my terror^(A) ahead of you and throw into confusion^(B) every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run.^{(C) 28} I will send the hornet^(D) ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites^(E) out of your way.

⁶ “‘I will grant peace in the land,^(A) and you will lie down^(B) and no one will make you afraid.^(C) I will remove wild beasts^(D) from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. ⁷ You will pursue your enemies,^(E) and they will fall by the sword before you. ⁸ Five^(F) of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.^(G)
