14 There is vanity which is done on the earth, that is, there are (A)righteous men to whom it [a]happens according to the works of the wicked. On the other hand, there are (B)wicked men to whom it [b]happens according to the works of the righteous. I say that this too is vanity. 15 So I laud gladness, for there is nothing good for (C)a man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to [c]be merry, and this will join with him in his labor throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

16 When I (D)gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the endeavor which has been done on the earth (even though one (E)never sees sleep with his eyes day or night),

14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(A) This too, I say, is meaningless.(B) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(C), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(D) and be glad.(E) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
