^26 (A)And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’

²⁷ that you shall say, ^(A)‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people ^(B)bowed their heads and worshiped.

⁸ And you shall ^(A)tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’ ⁹ It shall be as ^(B)a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. ^10 (C)You shall therefore keep this ^[a]ordinance in its season from year to year.

The Law of the Firstborn

¹¹ “And it shall be, when the Lord ^(D)brings you into the land of the ^(E)Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, ^12 (F)that you shall ^[b]set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s. ¹³ But ^(G)every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons ^(H)you shall redeem. ^14 (I)So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, ^(J)‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

⁵ And you shall answer and say before the Lord your God: ‘My father was ^(A)a ^[a]Syrian, ^(B)about to perish, and ^(C)he went down to Egypt and ^[b]dwelt there, ^(D)few in number; and there he became a nation, ^(E)great, mighty, and populous. ⁶ But the ^(F)Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. ^7 (G)Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. ⁸ So ^(H)the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, ^(I)with great terror and with signs and wonders. ⁹ He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, ^(J)“a land flowing with milk and honey”;
