23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter. So it was given the name Marah. 24 The people complained to Moses, saying, “What can we drink?” 25 Moses cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord made a Law for them and tested them.

25 Then Moses cried out(D) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(E) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(F)
