³ But the people thirsted there for water; and ^[a]they ^(A)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to put ^[b]us and ^[c]our children and ^[d](B)our livestock to death with thirst?”

² And all the sons of Israel ^(A)grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, “^(B)Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! ³ And why is Yahweh bringing us into this land, ^(C)to fall by the sword? ^(D)Our wives and our little ones will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?”

^3 (A)The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “^(B)If only we had breathed our last ^(C)when our brothers breathed their last before Yahweh!
