Exodus 6:3-5

3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the Lord.’[a](A) 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as aliens.(B) 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered(C) my covenant.

- 6:3 Lord (in small capitals) stands for the personal name of God, which in Hb is Yahweh. There is a long tradition of substituting “Lord” for “Yahweh” out of reverence.

3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty,[a](A) but by my name(B) the Lord[b](C) I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant(D) with them to give them the land(E) of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners.(F) 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning(G) of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.(H)
