Jerusalem’s Fall Explained

21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped(A) from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!(B) 22 Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me,(C) and he opened my mouth(D) before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.(E)

23 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 24 “Son of man, the people living in those ruins(F) in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many;(G) surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’(H) 25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat(I) meat with the blood(J) still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?(K) 26 You rely on your sword, you do detestable things,(L) and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife.(M) Should you then possess the land?’

27 “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.(N) 28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains(O) of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.(P) 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate(Q) waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’(R)

30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before(S) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy(T) for unjust gain.(U) 32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs(V) with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.(W)

33 “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.(X)

The Lord Will Be Israel’s Shepherd

34 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?(Y) You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.(Z) You have not strengthened the weak or healed(AA) the sick or bound up(AB) the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.(AC) So they were scattered because there was no shepherd,(AD) and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.(AE) My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.(AF) They were scattered(AG) over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.(AH)

“‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered(AI) and has become food for all the wild animals,(AJ) and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,(AK) therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against(AL) the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue(AM) my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.(AN)

11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep(AO) and look after them. 12 As a shepherd(AP) looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.(AQ) 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather(AR) them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.(AS) I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.(AT) 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel(AU) will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture(AV) on the mountains of Israel.(AW) 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down,(AX) declares the Sovereign Lord.(AY) 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up(AZ) the injured and strengthen the weak,(BA) but the sleek and the strong I will destroy.(BB) I will shepherd the flock with justice.(BC)

17 “‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.(BD) 18 Is it not enough(BE) for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet?(BF) Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19 Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.(BG) 21 Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns(BH) until you have driven them away, 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another.(BI) 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend(BJ) them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.(BK) 24 I the Lord will be their God,(BL) and my servant David(BM) will be prince among them.(BN) I the Lord have spoken.(BO)

25 “‘I will make a covenant(BP) of peace(BQ) with them and rid the land of savage beasts(BR) so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.(BS) 26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.[a](BT) I will send down showers in season;(BU) there will be showers of blessing.(BV) 27 The trees will yield their fruit(BW) and the ground will yield its crops;(BX) the people will be secure(BY) in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke(BZ) and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.(CA) 28 They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety,(CB) and no one will make them afraid.(CC) 29 I will provide for them a land renowned(CD) for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine(CE) in the land or bear the scorn(CF) of the nations.(CG) 30 Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.(CH) 31 You are my sheep,(CI) the sheep of my pasture,(CJ) and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

A Prophecy Against Edom

35 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir;(CK) prophesy against it and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand(CL) against you and make you a desolate waste.(CM) I will turn your towns into ruins(CN) and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(CO)

“‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword(CP) at the time of their calamity,(CQ) the time their punishment reached its climax,(CR) therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed(CS) and it will pursue you.(CT) Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste(CU) and cut off from it all who come and go.(CV) I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.(CW) I will make you desolate forever;(CX) your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(CY)

10 “‘Because you have said, “These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession(CZ) of them,” even though I the Lord was there, 11 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger(DA) and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.(DB) 12 Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.(DC) 13 You boasted(DD) against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.(DE) 14 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.(DF) 15 Because you rejoiced(DG) when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir,(DH) you and all of Edom.(DI) Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Hope for the Mountains of Israel

36 “Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel(DJ) and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says:(DK) The enemy said of you, “Aha!(DL) The ancient heights(DM) have become our possession.(DN)”’ Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged(DO) and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander,(DP) therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys,(DQ) to the desolate ruins(DR) and the deserted(DS) towns that have been plundered and ridiculed(DT) by the rest of the nations around you(DU) this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning(DV) zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’(DW) Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.(DX) Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand(DY) that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.(DZ)

“‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit(EA) for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,(EB) 10 and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins(EC) rebuilt.(ED) 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful(EE) and become numerous. I will settle people(EF) on you as in the past(EG) and will make you prosper more than before.(EH) Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;(EI) you will never again deprive them of their children.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people(EJ) and deprive your nation of its children,” 14 therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15 No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.(EK)’”

Israel’s Restoration Assured

16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness(EL) in my sight.(EM) 18 So I poured out(EN) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered(EO) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.(EP) 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned(EQ) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’(ER) 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(ES)

22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,(ET) which you have profaned(EU) among the nations where you have gone.(EV) 23 I will show the holiness of my great name,(EW) which has been profaned(EX) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,(EY) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy(EZ) through you before their eyes.(FA)

24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.(FB) 25 I will sprinkle(FC) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse(FD) you from all your impurities(FE) and from all your idols.(FF) 26 I will give you a new heart(FG) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone(FH) and give you a heart of flesh.(FI) 27 And I will put my Spirit(FJ) in you and move you to follow my decrees(FK) and be careful to keep my laws.(FL) 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,(FM) and I will be your God.(FN) 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine(FO) upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.(FP) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.(FQ) 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed(FR) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!(FS)

33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse(FT) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins(FU) will be rebuilt.(FV) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;(FW) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.(FX) 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’(FY)

37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea(FZ) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,(GA) 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings(GB) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(GC)

Footnotes

  1. Ezekiel 34:26 Or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be named in blessings (see Gen. 48:20); or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be seen as blessed

21 And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten.

22 Now the hand of the Lord was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.

23 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

24 Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.

25 Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?

26 Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife: and shall ye possess the land?

27 Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.

28 For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.

29 Then shall they know that I am the Lord, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.

30 Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord.

31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.

33 And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.

34 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.

The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.

And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.

My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord;

As I live, saith the Lord God, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord;

10 Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

11 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.

16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

17 And as for you, O my flock, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, between the rams and the he goats.

18 Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?

19 And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.

20 Therefore thus saith the Lord God unto them; Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat cattle and between the lean cattle.

21 Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad;

22 Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle.

23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.

24 And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it.

25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

26 And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing.

27 And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I am the Lord, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them.

28 And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid.

29 And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more.

30 Thus shall they know that I the Lord their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord God.

31 And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.

35 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, set thy face against mount Seir, and prophesy against it,

And say unto it, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O mount Seir, I am against thee, and I will stretch out mine hand against thee, and I will make thee most desolate.

I will lay thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.

Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end:

Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord God, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.

Thus will I make mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it him that passeth out and him that returneth.

And I will fill his mountains with his slain men: in thy hills, and in thy valleys, and in all thy rivers, shall they fall that are slain with the sword.

I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

10 Because thou hast said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it; whereas the Lord was there:

11 Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord God, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee.

12 And thou shalt know that I am the Lord, and that I have heard all thy blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid desolate, they are given us to consume.

13 Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.

14 Thus saith the Lord God; When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make thee desolate.

15 As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be desolate, O mount Seir, and all Idumea, even all of it: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

36 Also, thou son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord:

Thus saith the Lord God; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession:

Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people:

Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God; Thus saith the Lord God to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes, and to the cities that are forsaken, which became a prey and derision to the residue of the heathen that are round about;

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.

Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen:

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.

But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come.

For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown:

10 And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded:

11 And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

12 Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of men.

13 Thus saith the Lord God; Because they say unto you, Thou land devourest up men, and hast bereaved thy nations:

14 Therefore thou shalt devour men no more, neither bereave thy nations any more, saith the Lord God.

15 Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more, saith the Lord God.

16 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

17 Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman.

18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it:

19 And I scattered them among the heathen, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them.

20 And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the Lord, and are gone forth out of his land.

21 But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went.

22 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, thus saith the Lord God; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.

23 And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.

30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.

31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.

32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.

33 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.

34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by.

35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.

36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it.

37 Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock.

38 As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

The Fall of Jerusalem

21 And it came to pass in the twelfth year (A)of our captivity, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, (B)that one who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, (C)“The city has been [a]captured!”

22 Now (D)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the man came who had escaped. And He had (E)opened my mouth; so when he came to me in the morning, my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

The Cause of Judah’s Ruin

23 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 24 “Son of man, (F)they who inhabit those (G)ruins in the land of Israel are saying, (H)‘Abraham was only one, and he inherited the land. (I)But we are many; the land has been given to us as a (J)possession.’

25 “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: (K)“You eat meat with blood, you (L)lift up your eyes toward your idols, and (M)shed blood. Should you then possess the (N)land? 26 You rely on your sword, you commit abominations, and you (O)defile one another’s wives. Should you then possess the land?” ’

27 “Say thus to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “As I live, surely (P)those who are in the ruins shall fall by the sword, and the one who is in the open field (Q)I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and (R)caves shall die of the pestilence. 28 (S)For I will make the land most desolate, [b]her (T)arrogant strength shall cease, and (U)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will pass through. 29 Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.” ’

Hearing and Not Doing

30 “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they (V)speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 So (W)they come to you as people do, they (X)sit before you as My people, and they (Y)hear your words, but they do not do them; (Z)for with their mouth they show much love, but (AA)their hearts pursue their own gain. 32 Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do (AB)not do them. 33 (AC)And when this comes to pass—surely it will come—then (AD)they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Irresponsible Shepherds

34 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: (AE)“Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? (AF)You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you (AG)slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. (AH)The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor (AI)sought what was lost; but with (AJ)force and [c]cruelty you have ruled them. (AK)So they were (AL)scattered because there was no shepherd; (AM)and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. My sheep (AN)wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill; yes, My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one was seeking or searching for them.

‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: As I live,” says the Lord God, “surely because My flock became a prey, and My flock (AO)became food for every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, nor did My shepherds search for My flock, (AP)but the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock”— therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! 10 Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am (AQ)against the shepherds, and (AR)I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall (AS)feed themselves no more; for I will (AT)deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them.”

God, the True Shepherd

11 ‘For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12 As a (AU)shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on (AV)a cloudy and dark day. 13 And (AW)I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, [d]in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 (AX)I will feed them in good pasture, and their fold shall be on the high mountains of Israel. (AY)There they shall lie down in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord God. 16 (AZ)“I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy (BA)the fat and the strong, and feed them (BB)in judgment.”

17 ‘And as for you, O My flock, thus says the Lord God: (BC)“Behold, I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats. 18 Is it too little for you to have eaten up the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the [e]residue of your pasture—and to have drunk of the clear waters, that you must foul the residue with your feet? 19 And as for My flock, they eat what you have trampled with your feet, and they drink what you have fouled with your feet.”

20 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God to them: (BD)“Behold, I Myself will judge between the fat and the lean sheep. 21 Because you have pushed with side and shoulder, butted all the weak ones with your horns, and scattered them abroad, 22 therefore I will save My flock, and they shall no longer be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 I will establish one (BE)shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—(BF)My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And (BG)I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David (BH)a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.

25 (BI)“I will make a covenant of peace with them, and (BJ)cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they (BK)will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26 I will make them and the places all around (BL)My hill (BM)a blessing; and I will (BN)cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be (BO)showers of blessing. 27 Then (BP)the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase. They shall be safe in their land; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have (BQ)broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those who (BR)enslaved them. 28 And they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them; but (BS)they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make them afraid. 29 I will raise up for them a (BT)garden[f] of renown, and they shall (BU)no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, (BV)nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore. 30 Thus they shall know that (BW)I, the Lord their God, am with them, and they, the house of Israel, are (BX)My people,” says the Lord God.’

31 “You are My (BY)flock, the flock of My pasture; you are men, and I am your God,” says the Lord God.

Judgment on Mount Seir

35 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against (BZ)Mount Seir and (CA)prophesy against it, and say to it, ‘Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, O Mount Seir, I am against you;
(CB)I will stretch out My hand against you,
And make you [g]most desolate;
I shall lay your cities waste,
And you shall be desolate.
Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

(CC)“Because you have had an [h]ancient hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, (CD)when their iniquity came to an end, therefore, as I live,” says the Lord God, “I will prepare you for (CE)blood, and blood shall pursue you; (CF)since you have not hated [i]blood, therefore blood shall pursue you. Thus I will make Mount Seir [j]most desolate, and cut off from it the (CG)one who leaves and the one who returns. And I will fill its mountains with the slain; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those who are slain by the sword shall fall. (CH)I will make you [k]perpetually desolate, and your cities shall be uninhabited; (CI)then you shall know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you have said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will (CJ)possess them,’ although (CK)the Lord was there, 11 therefore, as I live,” says the Lord God, “I will do (CL)according to your anger and according to the envy which you showed in your hatred against them; and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you. 12 (CM)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. I have (CN)heard all your (CO)blasphemies which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are desolate; they are given to us to consume.’ 13 Thus (CP)with your mouth you have [l]boasted against Me and multiplied your (CQ)words against Me; I have heard them.

14 ‘Thus says the Lord God: (CR)“The whole earth will rejoice when I make you desolate. 15 (CS)As you rejoiced because the inheritance of the house of Israel was desolate, (CT)so I will do to you; you shall be desolate, O Mount Seir, as well as all of Edom—all of it! Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’

Blessing on Israel

36 “And you, son of man, prophesy to the (CU)mountains of Israel, and say, ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God: “Because (CV)the enemy has said of you, ‘Aha! (CW)The [m]ancient heights (CX)have become our possession,’ ” ’ therefore prophesy, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, (CY)and you are taken up by the lips of (CZ)talkers and slandered by the people”— therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God! Thus says the Lord God to the mountains, the hills, the [n]rivers, the valleys, the desolate wastes, and the cities that have been forsaken, which (DA)became plunder and (DB)mockery to the rest of the nations all around— therefore thus says the Lord God: (DC)“Surely I have spoken in My burning jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, (DD)who gave My land to themselves as a possession, with wholehearted joy and [o]spiteful minds, in order to plunder its open country.” ’

“Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, the hills, the rivers, and the valleys, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I have spoken in My jealousy and My fury, because you have (DE)borne the shame of the nations.” Therefore thus says the Lord God: “I have (DF)raised My hand in an oath that surely the nations that are around you shall (DG)bear their own shame. But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come. For indeed I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown. 10 I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and (DH)the ruins rebuilt. 11 (DI)I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and [p]bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do (DJ)better for you than at your beginnings. (DK)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. 12 Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, My people Israel; (DL)they shall take possession of you, and you shall be their inheritance; no more shall you (DM)bereave them of children.

13 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they say to you, (DN)‘You devour men and bereave your nation of children, 14 therefore you shall devour men no more, nor bereave your nation anymore,” says the Lord God. 15 (DO)“Nor will I let you hear the taunts of the nations anymore, nor bear the reproach of the peoples anymore, nor shall you cause your nation to stumble anymore,” says the Lord God.’ ”

The Renewal of Israel

16 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, (DP)they defiled it by their own ways and deeds; to Me their way was like (DQ)the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity. 18 Therefore I poured out My fury on them (DR)for the blood they had shed on the land, and for their idols with which they had defiled it. 19 So I (DS)scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them (DT)according to their ways and their deeds. 20 When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they (DU)profaned My holy name—when they said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of His land.’ 21 But I had concern (DV)for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, (DW)but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. 23 And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord,” says the Lord God, “when I am (DX)hallowed in you before their eyes. 24 For (DY)I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 (DZ)Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you (EA)from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a (EB)new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My (EC)Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 (ED)Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; (EE)you shall be My people, and I will be your God. 29 I will (EF)deliver you from all your uncleannesses. (EG)I will call for the grain and multiply it, and (EH)bring no famine upon you. 30 (EI)And I will multiply the fruit of your trees and the increase of your fields, so that you need never again bear the reproach of famine among the nations. 31 Then (EJ)you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good; and you (EK)will [q]loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (EL)Not for your sake do I do this,” says the Lord God, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!”

33 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, (EM)and the ruins shall be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. 35 So they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of (EN)Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. (EO)I, the Lord, have spoken it, and I will do it.

37 ‘Thus says the Lord God: (EP)“I will also let the house of Israel inquire of Me to do this for them: I will (EQ)increase their men like a flock. 38 Like a [r]flock offered as holy sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem on its [s]feast days, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of men. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”
