12 (A) And we were warned not to let our daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters.

Your prophets also told us never to help those foreigners or even let them live in peace. You wanted us to become strong and to enjoy the good things in the land, then someday to leave it to our children forever.

13 You punished us because of our terrible sins. But you did not punish us nearly as much as we deserve, and you have brought some of us back home. 14 Why should we disobey your commands again by letting our sons and daughters marry these foreigners who do such disgusting things? That would make you angry enough to destroy us all!

12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(A) at any time, that you may be strong(B) and eat the good things(C) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(D)

13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(E) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(F) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(G) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(H) leaving us no remnant(I) or survivor?
