And as people migrated[a] from the east they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to each other,[b] “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.”[c] And they had brick for stone and they had tar for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b](A) and settled there.

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,(E) so that we may make a name(F) for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered(G) over the face of the whole earth.”(H)
