God Pronounces Judgment

¹⁴Then the Lord God said to the snake, “You will be punished for this; you alone of all the animals must bear this curse: From now on you will crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust as long as you live. ¹⁵^(A)I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite her offspring's^[a] heel.”

¹⁶And he said to the woman, “I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him.”

¹⁴So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed^(A) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust^(B)
    all the days of your life.
¹⁵And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring^[a]^(C) and hers;^(D)
he will crush^[b] your head,^(E)
    and you will strike his heel.”

¹⁶To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.^(F)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.^(G)”
