²²While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and ^(A)lay with Bilhah his father's concubine. And Israel heard of it.

²²While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine^(A) Bilhah,^(B) and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

⁴Unstable as water, you shall not have pre-eminence,
because you ^(A)went up to your father's bed;
then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!

⁴Turbulent as the waters,^(A) you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.^(B)
