Genesis 38:28-30

28 As she was in labor, one of them put out his hand; and the midwife took his hand and tied a scarlet thread on it, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 But then he withdrew his hand, and his brother came out; so she said, “How did you manage to break out first?” Therefore he was named Peretz [breaking out]. 30 Then out came his brother, with the scarlet thread on his hand, and he was given the name Zerach [scarlet].

New International Version
28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife(A) took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist(B) and said, “This one came out first.” 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out,(C) and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.[a](D) 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist,(E) came out. And he was named Zerah.[b](F)
