Genesis 38:28-30
Easy-to-Read Version
28 While she was giving birth, one baby put his hand out. The nurse tied a red string on the hand and said, “This baby was born first.” 29 But that baby pulled his hand back in, so the other baby was born first. So the nurse said, “You were able to break out first!” So they named him Perez.[a] 30 After this, the other baby was born. This was the baby with the red string on his hand. They named him Zerah.[b]

New International Version
28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife(A) took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist(B) and said, “This one came out first.” 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out,(C) and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.[a](D) 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist,(E) came out. And he was named Zerah.[b](F)
