Cain Murders Abel

4 The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have had a male child with the Lord’s help.”^[a]

¹¹ Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years.^[a] Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.^(A)

² There was a certain man from Zorah,^(A) from the family of Dan, whose name was Manoah; his wife was unable to conceive and had no children. ³ The angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Although you are unable to conceive and have no children, you will conceive and give birth to a son.

² He had two wives,^(A) the first named Hannah^(B) and the second Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless.

²⁰ Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife:^(A) “May the Lord give you children by this woman in place of the one she^[a] has given to the Lord.”^(B) Then they would go home.

¹¹ By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she^[a] considered that the one who had promised was faithful.^{(A) 12} Therefore, from one man—in fact, from one as good as dead—came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore.^(B)
