⁵¹ Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh,^[a] meaning, “God has made me forget entirely my troubles and my father’s house”;

²⁰ In the land of Egypt Joseph became the father of Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore to him.^(A)

¹⁸ saying, “That is not right, father; the other one is the firstborn; lay your right hand on his head!”

²³ He saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation, and the children of Manasseh’s son Machir were also born on Joseph’s knees.^(A)
