16 When the news reached Pharaoh’s palace that Joseph’s brothers had come,(A) Pharaoh and all his officials(B) were pleased.(C) 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals(D) and return to the land of Canaan,(E) 18 and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt(F) and you can enjoy the fat of the land.’(G)

19 “You are also directed to tell them, ‘Do this: Take some carts(H) from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. 20 Never mind about your belongings,(I) because the best of all Egypt(J) will be yours.’”

21 So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts,(K) as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey.(L) 22 To each of them he gave new clothing,(M) but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels[a] of silver and five sets of clothes.(N) 23 And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys(O) loaded with the best things(P) of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey.(Q) 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, “Don’t quarrel on the way!”(R)

25 So they went up out of Egypt(S) and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.(T) 26 They told him, “Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.”(U) Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them.(V) 27 But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts(W) Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel said, “I’m convinced!(X) My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”(Y)

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel(Z) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(AA) he offered sacrifices(AB) to the God of his father Isaac.(AC)

And God spoke to Israel(AD) in a vision at night(AE) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(AF) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(AG) he said. “Do not be afraid(AH) to go down to Egypt,(AI) for I will make you into a great nation(AJ) there.(AK) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(AL) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(AM)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(AN) and Israel’s(AO) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(AP) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(AQ) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(AR) they had acquired(AS) in Canaan. Jacob brought with him to Egypt(AT) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(AU)

These are the names of the sons of Israel(AV) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn(AW) of Jacob.

The sons of Reuben:(AX)

Hanok, Pallu,(AY) Hezron and Karmi.(AZ)

10 The sons of Simeon:(BA)

Jemuel,(BB) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(BC) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi:(BD)

Gershon,(BE) Kohath(BF) and Merari.(BG)

12 The sons of Judah:(BH)

Er,(BI) Onan,(BJ) Shelah, Perez(BK) and Zerah(BL) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(BM)

The sons of Perez:(BN)

Hezron and Hamul.(BO)

13 The sons of Issachar:(BP)

Tola, Puah,[b](BQ) Jashub[c](BR) and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun:(BS)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[d](BT) besides his daughter Dinah.(BU) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

16 The sons of Gad:(BV)

Zephon,[e](BW) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher:(BX)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(BY) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BZ)—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(CA)

Joseph and Benjamin.(CB) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(CC) and Ephraim(CD) were born to Joseph(CE) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[f](CF)

21 The sons of Benjamin:(CG)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(CH)

22 These were the sons of Rachel(CI) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan:(CJ)

Hushim.(CK)

24 The sons of Naphtali:(CL)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(CM) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(CN)—seven in all.

26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(CO) 27 With the two sons[g] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(CP) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[h] in all.(CQ)

28 Now Jacob sent Judah(CR) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(CS) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(CT) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(CU) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[i] and wept(CV) for a long time.(CW)

30 Israel(CX) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(CY)

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CZ) have come to me.(DA) 32 The men are shepherds;(DB) they tend livestock,(DC) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(DD) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(DE) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(DF) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(DG) Then you will be allowed to settle(DH) in the region of Goshen,(DI) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(DJ)

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(DK) and are now in Goshen.”(DL) He chose five of his brothers and presented them(DM) before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(DN)

“Your servants(DO) are shepherds,(DP)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(DQ) because the famine is severe in Canaan(DR) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(DS) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(DT)

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(DU) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(DV) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(DW) put them in charge of my own livestock.(DX)

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(DY) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[j] Pharaoh,(DZ) Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(EA) My years have been few and difficult,(EB) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(EC) 10 Then Jacob blessed[k] Pharaoh(ED) and went out from his presence.

11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(EE) the district of Rameses,(EF) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(EG)

Joseph and the Famine

13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(EH) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(EI) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(EJ) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(EK) all Egypt came to Joseph(EL) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(EM) Our money is all gone.”

16 “Then bring your livestock,(EN)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(EO) 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(EP) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(EQ) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(ER) and our livestock belongs to you,(ES) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(ET)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(EU) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(EV) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(EW) and that the land may not become desolate.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(EX) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[l](EY) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(EZ) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(FA) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(FB) for you so you can plant the ground.(FC) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(FD) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”

25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(FE) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(FF)

26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(FG) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(FH)

27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(FI) They acquired property there(FJ) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(FK)

28 Jacob lived in Egypt(FL) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(FM)

16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.

17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;

18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.

19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.

20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is your's.

21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.

23 And to his father he sent after this manner; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way.

24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.

25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father,

26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.

27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:

28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

46 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.

And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.

And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:

I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:

His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.

And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

10 And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.

11 And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

12 And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

13 And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.

14 And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.

15 These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.

16 And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

17 And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.

18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls.

19 The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin.

20 And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

21 And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

22 These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen.

23 And the sons of Dan; Hushim.

24 And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

25 These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven.

26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six;

27 And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.

28 And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.

29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

30 And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.

31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;

32 And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.

33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?

34 That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

47 Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.

They said morever unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:

The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou?

And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

11 And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

12 And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

13 And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

15 And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.

16 And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

17 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.

18 When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

19 Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.

21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

22 Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands.

23 Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

24 And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

25 And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's.

27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.

16 Now the report of it was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, “Joseph’s brothers have come.” So it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and depart; go to the land of Canaan. 18 Bring your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat (A)the [a]fat of the land. 19 Now you are commanded—do this: Take carts out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and your wives; bring your father and come. 20 Also do not be concerned about your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’ ”

21 Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them (B)carts,[b] according to the command of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey. 22 He gave to all of them, to each man, (C)changes of garments; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and (D)five changes of garments. 23 And he sent to his father these things: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and food for his father for the journey. 24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, “See that you do not become troubled along the way.”

25 Then they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt.” (E)And Jacob’s heart stood still, because he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit (F)of Jacob their father revived. 28 Then Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

Jacob’s Journey to Egypt(G)

46 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to (H)Beersheba, and offered sacrifices (I)to the God of his father Isaac. Then God spoke to Israel (J)in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

So He said, “I am God, (K)the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will (L)make of you a great nation there. (M)I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely (N)bring you up again; and (O)Joseph [c]will put his hand on your eyes.”

Then (P)Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the [d]carts (Q)which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, (R)Jacob and all his descendants with him. His sons and his sons’ sons, his daughters and his sons’ daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.

Now (S)these were the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: (T)Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn. The (U)sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 (V)The sons of Simeon were [e]Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, [f]Jachin, [g]Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of (W)Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 The sons of (X)Judah were (Y)Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). (Z)The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, [h]Puvah, [i]Job, and Shimron. 14 The (AA)sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These were the (AB)sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, were thirty-three.

16 The sons of Gad were [j]Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, [k]Ezbon, Eri, [l]Arodi, and Areli. 17 (AC)The sons of Asher were Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. And the sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. 18 (AD)These were the sons of Zilpah, (AE)whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons.

19 The (AF)sons of Rachel, (AG)Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin. 20 (AH)And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 21 (AI)The sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, (AJ)Ehi, Rosh, (AK)Muppim, [m]Huppim, and Ard. 22 These were the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons in all.

23 The son of Dan was [n]Hushim. 24 (AL)The sons of Naphtali were [o]Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and [p]Shillem. 25 (AM)These were the sons of Bilhah, (AN)whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: seven persons in all.

26 (AO)All the persons who went with Jacob to Egypt, who came from his body, (AP)besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all. 27 And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. (AQ)All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.

Jacob Settles in Goshen

28 Then he sent Judah before him to Joseph, (AR)to point out before him the way to Goshen. And they came (AS)to the land of Goshen. 29 So Joseph made ready his (AT)chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and (AU)fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.

30 And Israel said to Joseph, (AV)“Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive.”

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, (AW)“I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘My brothers and those of my father’s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 And the men are (AX)shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.’ 33 So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, (AY)‘What is your occupation?’ 34 that you shall say, ‘Your servants’ (AZ)occupation has been with livestock (BA)from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is (BB)an[q] abomination to the Egyptians.”

Joseph Is Governor of Egypt

47 Then Joseph (BC)went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in (BD)the land of Goshen.” And he took five men from among his brothers and (BE)presented them to Pharaoh. Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, (BF)“What is your occupation?”

And they said to Pharaoh, (BG)“Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.” And they said to Pharaoh, (BH)“We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, (BI)for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants (BJ)dwell in the land of Goshen.”

Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. (BK)The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell (BL)in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”

Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob (BM)blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, (BN)“The days of the years of my [r]pilgrimage are (BO)one hundred and thirty years; (BP)few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and (BQ)they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10 So Jacob (BR)blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of (BS)Rameses, (BT)as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 Then Joseph provided (BU)his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread, according to the number in their families.

Joseph Deals with the Famine

13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, (BV)so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (BW)And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for (BX)why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”

16 Then Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he [s]fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.

18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may (BY)live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”

20 Then Joseph (BZ)bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he [t]moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end. 22 (CA)Only the land of the (CB)priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.

23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”

25 So they said, “You have saved (CC)our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” 26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, (CD)except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.

Joseph’s Vow to Jacob

27 So Israel (CE)dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and (CF)grew and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years.
