14 So the Lord stirred up(A) the spirit of Zerubbabel(B) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak,(C) the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant(D) of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.(E)

The Promised Glory of the New House

In the second year of King Darius,(F) on the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(G) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(H) “Speak to Zerubbabel(I) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a](J) the high priest, and to the remnant(K) of the people. Ask them, ‘Who of you is left who saw this house(L) in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?(M) But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(N) Joshua son of Jozadak,(O) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(P) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted(Q) with you when you came out of Egypt.(R) And my Spirit(S) remains among you. Do not fear.’(T)

“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while(U) I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,(V) the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and what is desired(W) by all nations will come, and I will fill this house(X) with glory,(Y)’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘The silver is mine and the gold(Z) is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘The glory(AA) of this present house(AB) will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,(AC)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

Footnotes

  1. Haggai 2:2 Hebrew Jehozadak, a variant of Jozadak; also in verse 4

14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

15 In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the Lord by the prophet Haggai, saying,

Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:

According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.

The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

14 So (A)the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, (B)governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; (C)and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.

(G)According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so (H)My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’

“For thus says the Lord of hosts: (I)‘Once more (it is a little while) (J)I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to (K)the [c]Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this [d]temple with (L)glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. (M)‘The glory of this latter [e]temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give (N)peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.”
