For if the word (A)spoken through (B)angels proved [a]unalterable, and (C)every violation and act of disobedience received a just [b](D)punishment, (E)how will we escape if we neglect so great a (F)salvation? [c]After it was at first (G)spoken through the Lord, it was (H)confirmed to us by those who heard, God also testifying with them, both by (I)signs and wonders, and by (J)various [d]miracles and by [e](K)gifts of the Holy Spirit (L)according to His own will.

Earth Subject to Man

For He did not subject to angels [f](M)the world to come, about which we are speaking. But someone has testified (N)somewhere, saying,

(O)What is man, that You think of him?
Or a son of man, that You are concerned about him?
(P)You have made him [g]for a little while lower than angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor[h];
(Q)You have put everything in subjection under his feet.”

For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now (R)we do not yet see all things subjected to him.

Jesus Briefly Humbled

But we do see Him who was (S)made [i]for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, (T)because of His suffering death (U)crowned with glory and honor, so that (V)by the grace of God He might (W)taste death (X)for everyone.

10 For (Y)it was fitting for Him, (Z)for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to (AA)perfect the [j](AB)originator of their salvation through sufferings. 11 For both He who (AC)sanctifies and those who (AD)are [k]sanctified are all (AE)from one Father; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them (AF)brothers and sisters, 12 saying,

(AG)I will proclaim Your name to My brothers,
In the midst of the assembly I will sing Your praise.”

13 And again,

(AH)I will put My trust in Him.”

And again,

(AI)Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”

14 Therefore, since the children share in [l](AJ)flesh and blood, (AK)He Himself likewise also partook of the same, so that (AL)through death He might destroy (AM)the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who through (AN)fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16 For clearly He does not [m]give help to angels, but He gives help to the [n]descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things He [o]had (AO)to be made like His brothers so that He might (AP)become a merciful and faithful (AQ)high priest in (AR)things pertaining to God, to (AS)make [p]propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was [q](AT)tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are [r]tempted.

For since the message spoken(A) through angels(B) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(C) how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(D) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(E) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(F) God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(G) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(H) distributed according to his will.(I)

Jesus Made Fully Human

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone(J) has testified:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    a son of man that you care for him?(K)
You made them a little[a] lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor
    and put everything under their feet.”[b][c](L)

In putting everything under them,[d] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[e] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[f] But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(M) because he suffered death,(N) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(O)

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(P) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(Q) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(R) and those who are made holy(S) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[g](T) 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
    in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[h](U)

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”[i](V)

And again he says,

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”[j](W)

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(X) he too shared in their humanity(Y) so that by his death he might break the power(Z) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(AA) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(AB) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(AC) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[k](AD) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(AE) and faithful high priest(AF) in service to God,(AG) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(AH) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(AI)

For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?

Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

28 (A)Anyone who has ignored the Law of Moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 (B)How much more severe punishment do you think he will deserve (C)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean (D)the blood of the covenant (E)by which he was sanctified, and has (F)insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “(G)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(H)The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a (I)terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the (J)living God.

32 But remember (K)the former days, [a]when, after being (L)enlightened, you endured a great (M)conflict of sufferings, 33 partly by being (N)made a public spectacle through insults and distress, and partly by becoming [b](O)companions with those who were so treated. 34 For you (P)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted (Q)joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves (R)a better and lasting possession. 35 Therefore, do not throw away your (S)confidence, which has a great (T)reward. 36 For you have need of (U)endurance, so that when you have (V)done the will of God, you may (W)receive [c]what was promised.

37 (X)For yet in a very little while,
(Y)He who is coming will come, and will not delay.
38 (Z)But My righteous one will live by faith;
And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

39 But [d]we are not among those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith for the safekeeping of the soul.

28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(A) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(B) underfoot,(C) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(D) that sanctified them,(E) and who has insulted the Spirit(F) of grace?(G) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a](H) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[b](I) 31 It is a dreadful thing(J) to fall into the hands(K) of the living God.(L)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(M) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(N) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(O) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(P) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(Q) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(R) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(S) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(T) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(U) 37 For,

“In just a little while,

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
