No one chooses himself to be high priest. But God calls him, just as he called Aaron.

So Christ did not choose himself to be a high priest. But he was chosen by the One who said to him, `You are my Son, and I am your Father today.'

In another place in the holy writings God said, `You are a priest for ever like Melchizedek.'

And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(A)

In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(B) of becoming a high priest.(C) But God said(D) to him,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father.”[a](E)

And he says in another place,

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.(F)[b](G)
