2 2 The Church shall be restored by Christ, and the Gentiles called. 6 The punishment of the rebellious and obstinate.

1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw upon Judah and Jerusalem,

2 (A)It [a]shall be in the last days, that the mountain of the House of the Lord shall be prepared in the top of the mountains, and [b]shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall [c]flow unto it.

3 And many people shall go, and say, Come, and let us go up to [d]the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths, (B)for the [e]Law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from [f]Jerusalem.

4 And [g]he shall judge among the nations, and [h]rebuke many people: they shall [i]break their swords also into mattocks, and their spears into scythes: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn [j]to fight anymore.

5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us [k]walk in the Law of the Lord.

6 Surely thou [l]hast forsaken thy people, the house of Jacob, because they are [m]full of the East manners, and are sorcerers as the Philistines, [n]and abound with strange children.

7 Their land also was full of [o]silver and gold, and there was none end of their treasures: and their land was full of horses, and their chariots were infinite.

8 Their land was also full of idols; they worshipped the work of their own hands, which their own fingers have made.

9 And a man bowed himself, and a man [p]humbled himself: therefore [q]spare them not.

10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust from before the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his Majesty.

11 The high look of man shall be humbled, and the loftiness of men shall be abased, and the Lord only shall be exalted in [r]that day.

12 For the day of the Lord of hosts is upon all the proud and haughty, and upon all that is exalted: and it shall be made low.

13 Even upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and exalted, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

14 And upon all the high [s]mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

15 And upon every high tower, and upon every strong wall,

16 And upon [t]all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

17 And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low, and the loftiness of men shall be abased, and the Lord shall only be exalted in that day.

18 And the idols will he utterly destroy.

19 Then shall they go (C)into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth from before the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall arise to destroy the earth.

20 At that day shall man cast away his silver idols and his golden idols (which they had made themselves to worship them) [u]to the moles, and to the backs,

21 To go into the holes of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks from before the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall rise to destroy the earth.

22 Cease you from the man, whose [v]breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be esteemed?

  10. Isaiah 2:4 He speaketh not against the use of weapons and lawful war, but showeth how the hearts of the godly shall be affected one toward another: Which peace and love doth begin and grow in this life, but shall be perfected when we are joined with our Head Christ Jesus.
  11. Isaiah 2:5 Seeing the Gentiles will be so ready, make you haste, and show them the way to worship God.
  12. Isaiah 2:6 The Prophet seeing the small hope that the Jews would convert, complaineth to God, as though he had utterly forsaken them for their sins.
  13. Isaiah 2:6 Full of the corruptions that reigned chiefly in the East parts.
  14. Isaiah 2:6 They altogether gave themselves to the fashions of other nations.
  15. Isaiah 2:7 The Prophet first condemned their superstition and idolatry: next their covetousness, and thirdly their vain trust in worldly means.
  16. Isaiah 2:9 He noteth the nature of the idolaters, which are never satisfied in their superstitions.
  17. Isaiah 2:9 Thus the Prophet spake, being inflamed with the zeal of God’s glory, and that he might fear them with God’s judgment.
  18. Isaiah 2:11 Meaning, as soon as God shall begin to execute his judgments.
  19. Isaiah 2:14 By high trees and mountains are meant them that are proud and lofty, and think themselves most strong in this world.
  20. Isaiah 2:16 He condemneth their vain confidence, which they had in strongholds, and in their rich merchandise, which brought in vain pleasures, wherewith men’s minds became effeminate.
  21. Isaiah 2:20 They shall cast them into most vile and filthy places, when they perceive that they are not able to help them.
  22. Isaiah 2:22 Cast off your vain confidence of man, whose life is so frail, that if his nose be stopped, he is dead, and consider that you have to do with God.

The Mountain of the Lord(A)

2 This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:(B)

2 In the last days(C)

the mountain(D) of the Lord’s temple will be established
    as the highest of the mountains;(E)
it will be exalted(F) above the hills,
    and all nations will stream to it.(G)

3 Many peoples(H) will come and say,

“Come, let us go(I) up to the mountain(J) of the Lord,
    to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
    so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law(K) will go out from Zion,
    the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.(L)
4 He will judge(M) between the nations
    and will settle disputes(N) for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
    and their spears into pruning hooks.(O)
Nation will not take up sword against nation,(P)
    nor will they train for war anymore.

5 Come, descendants of Jacob,(Q)
    let us walk in the light(R) of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord

6 You, Lord, have abandoned(S) your people,
    the descendants of Jacob.(T)
They are full of superstitions from the East;
    they practice divination(U) like the Philistines(V)
    and embrace(W) pagan customs.(X)
7 Their land is full of silver and gold;(Y)
    there is no end to their treasures.(Z)
Their land is full of horses;(AA)
    there is no end to their chariots.(AB)
8 Their land is full of idols;(AC)
    they bow down(AD) to the work of their hands,(AE)
    to what their fingers(AF) have made.
9 So people will be brought low(AG)
    and everyone humbled(AH)—
    do not forgive them.[a](AI)

10 Go into the rocks, hide(AJ) in the ground
    from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty!(AK)
11 The eyes of the arrogant(AL) will be humbled(AM)
    and human pride(AN) brought low;(AO)
the Lord alone will be exalted(AP) in that day.(AQ)

12 The Lord Almighty has a day(AR) in store
    for all the proud(AS) and lofty,(AT)
for all that is exalted(AU)
    (and they will be humbled),(AV)
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,(AW) tall and lofty,(AX)
    and all the oaks of Bashan,(AY)
14 for all the towering mountains
    and all the high hills,(AZ)
15 for every lofty tower(BA)
    and every fortified wall,(BB)
16 for every trading ship[b](BC)
    and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low(BD)
    and human pride humbled;(BE)
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,(BF)
18     and the idols(BG) will totally disappear.(BH)

19 People will flee to caves(BI) in the rocks
    and to holes in the ground(BJ)
from the fearful presence(BK) of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(BL)
    when he rises to shake the earth.(BM)
20 In that day(BN) people will throw away
    to the moles and bats(BO)
their idols of silver and idols of gold,(BP)
    which they made to worship.(BQ)
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks(BR)
    and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(BS)
    when he rises(BT) to shake the earth.(BU)

22 Stop trusting in mere humans,(BV)
    who have but a breath(BW) in their nostrils.
    Why hold them in esteem?(BX)
