16 You say, “No, we need horses to run away on.”
    So you will run away on horses.
You say, “We will ride away on fast horses.”
    So those who chase you will be fast.
17 One enemy will make threats,
    and 1,000 of your men will run away.
Five enemies will make threats,
    and all of you will run from them.
You will be left alone like a flagpole on a hilltop.
    You will be like a banner on a hill.
18 The Lord wants to show his mercy to you.
    He wants to rise and comfort you.
The Lord is a fair God.
    And everyone who waits for his help will be happy.

17 A thousand will flee
    at the threat of one;
at the threat of five(C)

18 Yet the Lord longs(G) to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.(H)

17 One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.

18 And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
