3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah: Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub,[a] at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the fuller’s field, 4 and say to him: Take care you remain calm and do not fear; do not let your courage fail before these two stumps of smoldering brands,(A) the blazing anger of Rezin and the Arameans and of the son of Remaliah— 5 because Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned[b] evil against you. - 7:3 Shear-jashub: this name means “a remnant will return” (cf. 10:20–22).
- 7:5 Planned: the plans of those who plot against Ahaz shall not be accomplished (v. 7). What the Lord plans will unfailingly come to pass, whereas human plans contrary to those of the Lord are doomed to frustration; cf. 8:10; 14:24–27; 19:11–14; 29:15; 30:1. See further the note on 14:24–27.

3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[a](A) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(B) 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(C) and don’t be afraid.(D) Do not lose heart(E) because of these two smoldering stubs(F) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(G) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(H) 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(I) son have plotted(J) your ruin, saying,
