⁵For ^(A)My sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon ^(B)Edom,
And upon the people whom I have ^(C)designated for destruction.
⁶The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in ^(D)Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of ^(E)Edom.

63 Who is this who comes from ^(A)Edom,

This One who is majestic in His apparel,
^[b]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, ^(D)mighty to save.”
²Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who ^(E)treads in the wine press?
³“^(F)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no one with Me.
I also ^(G)trod them in My anger
And ^(H)trampled them in My wrath;
And ^(I)their ^[c]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I ^[d]stained all My clothes.
⁴For the ^(J)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
⁵I looked, but there was ^(K)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My ^(L)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
⁶I ^(M)trampled down the peoples in My anger
And made them ^(N)drunk with My wrath,
And I ^[e]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

⁷Concerning ^(A)Edom.
This is what the Lord of armies says:
“Is there no longer any ^(B)wisdom in ^(C)Teman?
Has good advice been lost by the prudent?
Has their wisdom decayed?
⁸Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths,
You inhabitants of ^(D)Dedan,
For I ^[a]will bring the ^(E)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I ^[b]punish him.
⁹^(F)If grape pickers came to you,
Would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves came by night,
They would destroy only what was sufficient for them.
¹⁰But I have ^(G)stripped Esau bare,
I have uncovered his hiding places
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His ^[c]offspring have been destroyed along with his ^[d]brothers
And his neighbors, and ^(H)he no longer exists.
¹¹Leave your ^[e]^(I)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your ^(J)widows trust in Me.”

¹²For this is what the Lord says: “Behold, those ^[f]who were not sentenced to drink the ^(K)cup will certainly drink it, so are you the one who will be held ^(L)completely blameless? You will not be held blameless, but you will certainly drink it. ¹³For I have ^(M)sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that ^(N)Bozrah will become an ^(O)object of horror, a disgrace, a wasteland, and a curse; and all its cities will become permanent ruins.”

¹⁴I have ^(P)heard a message from the Lord,
And a ^(Q)messenger is being sent among the nations, saying,
“^(R)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
¹⁵“For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among people.
¹⁶As for the terror you cause,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
You who live in the clefts of ^[g]the ^(S)rock,
Who occupy the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as ^(T)high as an eagle’s,
I will ^(U)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

¹⁷“Edom will become an ^(V)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will ^[h]^(W)hiss at all its wounds. ¹⁸Like the ^(X)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “^(Y)no one will live there, nor will ^[i]anyone of mankind reside in it. ¹⁹^(Z)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the ^(AA)thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is ^(AB)chosen. For who is ^(AC)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd ^(AD)who can stand against Me?”

²⁰Therefore hear the ^(AE)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has in mind against the inhabitants of Teman: they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture ^(AF)desolate because of them. ²¹The ^(AG)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the ^[j]Red Sea. ²²Behold, ^[k]He will mount up and ^(AH)swoop like an eagle, and spread out His wings ^[l]against Bozrah; and the ^(AI)hearts of the warriors of Edom on that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

¹²‘The Lord God says this: “Because ^(A)Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” ¹³therefore this is what the Lord God says: “I will also ^(B)reach out with My hand against Edom and ^(C)eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from ^(D)Teman even to ^(E)Dedan they will fall by the sword. ¹⁴And ^(F)I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom ^(G)in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

Prophecy against Mount Seir

35 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ²“Son of man, set your face against ^(A)Mount Seir, and prophesy against it ³and say to it, ‘This is what the Lord ^[a]God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir,
And I will ^(B)reach out with My hand against you
And make you a ^(C)desolation and a waste.
⁴I will ^(D)turn your cities to ruins,
And you will become a desolation.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.

⁵Since you have had everlasting ^(E)hostility and have turned over the sons of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of the ^[b]^(F)punishment of the end, ⁶therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God, “I will certainly ^[c]doom you to ^(G)bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you; since you have not hated bloodshed, therefore bloodshed will pursue you. ⁷I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation and I will eliminate from it one who passes through and returns. ⁸I will ^(H)fill its mountains with its slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines. ⁹I will make you a permanent ^(I)desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

¹⁰“Since you have ^(J)said, ‘These two nations and these two lands will be mine, and we will possess ^[d]them,’ although the ^(K)Lord was there, ¹¹therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God, “I will deal with you ^(L)according to your anger and according to your envy which you displayed because of your hatred for them; so I will ^(M)make Myself known among them when I judge you. ¹²Then you will know ^[e]that I, the Lord, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel saying, ‘They are desolate; they have been ^(N)given to us as food.’ ¹³And you have ^[f]^(O)spoken arrogantly against Me and have multiplied your words against Me; ^(P)I Myself have heard it.” ¹⁴This is what the Lord God says: “As all the ^(Q)earth rejoices, I will make you a desolation. ¹⁵As you ^(R)rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, ^(S)so I will do to you. You will be a ^(T)desolation, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”’

Edom Will Be Humbled

¹The vision of Obadiah.

This is what the Lord ^[a]God says concerning ^(A)Edom—

^(B)We have heard a report from the Lord,
And a ^(C)messenger has been sent among the nations saying,
“^(D)Arise, and let’s go up against her for battle”—
²“Behold, I will make you ^(E)small among the nations;
You are greatly despised.
³The ^(F)arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
The one who lives in the clefts of ^[b]the ^(G)rock,
On the height of his dwelling place,
Who says in his heart,
‘^(H)Who will bring me down to earth?’
⁴Though you ^(I)make your home high like the eagle,
Though you set your nest among the ^(J)stars,
From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.
⁵“If ^(K)thieves came to you,
If ^[c]robbers by night—
Oh how you will be ruined!—
Would they not steal only ^[d]until they had enough?
If grape-pickers came to you,
^(L)Would they not leave some gleanings?
⁶Oh how Esau will be ^(M)searched,
And his hidden treasures searched out!
⁷All the ^(N)people ^[e]allied with you
Will send you to the border,
And the people at peace with you
Will deceive you and overpower you.

Will set an ambush for you.

⁸Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,
“^(Q)Eliminate wise men from Edom,
And understanding from the mountain of Esau?
⁹Then your ^(R)warriors will be filled with terror, ^(S)Teman,
So that everyone will be ^(T)eliminated from the mountain of Esau by murder.

¹⁰“Because of ^(U)violence to your brother Jacob,
Shame will cover you,
^(V)And you will be eliminated forever.
¹¹On the day that you ^(W)stood aloof,
On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,
And foreigners entered his gate
And ^(X)cast lots for Jerusalem—
^(Y)You too were as one of them.
¹²^(Z)Do not ^[g]gloat over your brother’s day,
The day of his misfortune.
And ^(AA)do not rejoice over the sons of Judah
On the day of their destruction;
Yes, ^(AB)do not ^[h]boast
On the day of their distress.
¹³Do not enter the gate of My people
On the ^(AC)day of their disaster.
You indeed, do not ^[i]gloat over their catastrophe
On the day of their disaster.
And do not ^(AD)lay a hand on their wealth
On the day of their disaster.
¹⁴Do not ^(AE)stand at the crossroads
To eliminate their survivors;
And do not hand over their refugees
On the day of their distress.
