Do you think the Scripture means nothing? It says, “The Spirit that God made to live in us wants us for himself alone.”[a] But God gives us even more grace, as the Scripture says,

“God is against the proud,
    but he gives grace to the humble.” Proverbs 3:34

So give yourselves to God. Stand against the devil, and the devil will run away from you.

Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[a]?(A) But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
    but shows favor to the humble.”[b](B)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(C) and he will flee from you.
