behold, I will (A)send and take all the families of the north,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (B)My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations; and I will [a]devote them to destruction and (C)make them an object of horror and of hissing and an everlasting waste place. 10 Moreover, I will [b](D)make the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the (E)sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp, to perish from them. 11 (F)This whole land will be a waste place and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon (G)seventy years.

Punishment Against Babylon

12 ‘Then it will be (H)when seventy years are fulfilled, that I will (I)punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares Yahweh, ‘for their iniquity, even the land of the Chaldeans; and (J)I will make it an everlasting desolation. 13 I will bring upon that land all My words which I have spoken against it, all that is written in (K)this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against (L)all the nations. 14 [c]For (M)many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will (N)repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands—’”

15 For thus Yahweh, the God of Israel, says to me, “Take this (O)cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and cause all the nations to whom I send you to drink it. 16 They will (P)drink and stagger and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them.”

17 Then I took the cup from the hand of Yahweh and (Q)made all the nations to whom Yahweh sent me drink it: 18 (R)Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and its kings and its princes, to make them a waste place, an object of horror, an object of hissing, and a curse, as it is this day; 19 (S)Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his princes, and all his people, 20 and all the [d](T)foreign people, all the kings of the (U)land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the (V)Philistines (even Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of (W)Ashdod), 21 (X)Edom, (Y)Moab, and the sons of (Z)Ammon, 22 and all the kings of (AA)Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of (AB)the coastlands which are beyond the sea, 23 and (AC)Dedan, Tema, (AD)Buz, and all who (AE)cut [e]the corners of their hair, 24 and all the kings of (AF)Arabia and all the kings of the [f](AG)foreign people who dwell in the desert, 25 and all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of (AH)Elam, and all the kings of (AI)Media, 26 and all the kings of the north, near and far, one with another; and (AJ)all the kingdoms of the earth which are upon the face of the ground, and the king of [g](AK)Sheshach shall drink after them.

27 “You shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “(AL)Drink, be drunk, vomit, fall, and rise no more because of the (AM)sword which I will send among you.”’ 28 And it will be, if they (AN)refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you will say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts: “(AO)You shall surely drink! 29 For behold, I am (AP)beginning to bring evil against this city which is (AQ)called by My name. But shall you be completely free from punishment? You will not be free from punishment, for (AR)I am calling for a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth,” declares Yahweh of hosts.’

I will summon(A) all the peoples of the north(B) and my servant(C) Nebuchadnezzar(D) king of Babylon,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy[a](E) them and make them an object of horror and scorn,(F) and an everlasting ruin.(G) 10 I will banish from them the sounds(H) of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,(I) the sound of millstones(J) and the light of the lamp.(K) 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,(L) and these nations will serve(M) the king of Babylon seventy years.(N)

12 “But when the seventy years(O) are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon(P) and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,[b] for their guilt,” declares the Lord, “and will make it desolate(Q) forever. 13 I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written(R) in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 They themselves will be enslaved(S) by many nations(T) and great kings; I will repay(U) them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of God’s Wrath

15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup(V) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send(W) you drink it. 16 When they drink(X) it, they will stagger(Y) and go mad(Z) because of the sword(AA) I will send among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent(AB) me drink it: 18 Jerusalem(AC) and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin(AD) and an object of horror and scorn,(AE) a curse[c](AF)—as they are today;(AG) 19 Pharaoh king(AH) of Egypt,(AI) his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz;(AJ) all the kings of the Philistines(AK) (those of Ashkelon,(AL) Gaza,(AM) Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); 21 Edom,(AN) Moab(AO) and Ammon;(AP) 22 all the kings of Tyre(AQ) and Sidon;(AR) the kings of the coastlands(AS) across the sea; 23 Dedan,(AT) Tema,(AU) Buz(AV) and all who are in distant places[d];(AW) 24 all the kings of Arabia(AX) and all the kings of the foreign people(AY) who live in the wilderness; 25 all the kings of Zimri,(AZ) Elam(BA) and Media;(BB) 26 and all the kings of the north,(BC) near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms(BD) on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak[e](BE) will drink it too.

27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk(BF) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword(BG) I will send among you.’ 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink(BH), tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster(BI) on the city that bears my Name,(BJ) and will you indeed go unpunished?(BK) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword(BL) on all(BM) who live on the earth,(BN) declares the Lord Almighty.’

Word Against Philistia

47 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the (A)Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (B)Gaza. Thus says Yahweh:

“Behold, waters are going to rise from (C)the north
And become an overflowing torrent,
And (D)overflow the land as well as its fullness,
The city and those who inhabit it;
And the men will (E)cry out,
And every inhabitant of the land will wail.
Because of the noise of the [a](F)galloping hoofs of his [b]valiant steeds,
The quaking of his chariots, and the tumult of his wheels,
The fathers have not turned back for their children,
Because of the limpness of their hands,
On account of the day that is coming
To (G)destroy all the Philistines,
To cut off from (H)Tyre and Sidon
Every ally that is left;
For Yahweh is going to destroy the Philistines,
The remnant of the coastland of (I)Caphtor.
(J)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
(K)Ashkelon has been ruined.
O remnant of their valley,
How long will you (L)gash yourself?
Ah, (M)sword of Yahweh,
How long will you not be quiet?
Withdraw into your sheath;
[c]Be at rest and stay still.
How can [d]it be quiet?
Yahweh has (N)given it a command;
Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast—
There He has (O)assigned it.”

Word Against Moab

48 Concerning (P)Moab. Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel,

“Woe to (Q)Nebo, for it has been destroyed;
(R)Kiriathaim has been put to shame, it has been captured;
The lofty stronghold has been put to shame and [e]shattered.
There is praise for Moab no longer;
In (S)Heshbon they have devised calamity against her:
‘Come and let us cut her off from being a nation!’
You too, [f]Madmen, will be silenced;
The sword will follow after you.
The sound of an outcry from (T)Horonaim,
[g]Devastation and great destruction!’
Moab is broken;
Her little ones have made their cry of distress heard.
For by the ascent of (U)Luhith
They will ascend with continual weeping;
For at the descent of Horonaim
They have heard the distressed cry of destruction.
(V)Flee, escape with your lives,
That you may be like a juniper in the wilderness.
For because of your (W)trust in your own works and treasures,
Even you yourself will be captured;
And (X)Chemosh will go off into exile
Together with his priests and his princes.
A destroyer will come to every city,
So that no city will escape;
The valley also will perish,
And the (Y)plateau will be destroyed,
As Yahweh has said.
Give [h](Z)wings to Moab,
For she will [i]flee away;
And her cities will become a (AA)desolation,
Without inhabitants in them.
10 (AB)Cursed be the one who does the work of Yahweh (AC)with a slack hand,
And cursed be the one who restrains his (AD)sword from blood.

11 “Moab has been (AE)at ease since his youth;
He has also had (AF)quiet, like wine on [j]its dregs,
And he has not been (AG)emptied from vessel to vessel,
Nor has he gone into exile.
Therefore [k]he retains his flavor,
And his aroma has not changed.

12 Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will empty his vessels and shatter [l]his jars. 13 And Moab will be (AH)ashamed of (AI)Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of (AJ)Bethel, their trust.

14 How can you say, ‘We are (AK)mighty warriors,
And men valiant for battle’?
15 Moab has been destroyed, and [m]men have gone up to [n]his cities;
His choicest [o](AL)young men have also gone down to the slaughter,”
Declares the (AM)King, whose name is Yahweh of hosts.
16 “The disaster of Moab will (AN)soon come,
And his calamity has quickly hastened.
17 Mourn for him, all you who live around him,
Even all of you who know his name;
Say, ‘How has the strong [p](AO)scepter been broken,
A staff of beauty!’
18 (AP)Come down from your glory
And inhabit [q]the parched ground,
O inhabitant of the (AQ)daughter of (AR)Dibon;
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you,
He has ruined your strongholds.
19 Stand by the road and keep watch,
O inhabitant of (AS)Aroer;
(AT)Ask him who flees and her who escapes
And say, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab has been put to shame, for it has been [r]shattered.
Wail and cry out;
Declare by the (AU)Arnon
That Moab has been destroyed.

21 “Judgment has also come upon the plain, upon Holon, upon (AV)Jahzah, and against (AW)Mephaath, 22 and against Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 and against Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and (AX)Beth-meon, 24 and against (AY)Kerioth, Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 The (AZ)horn of Moab has been cut in pieces and his (BA)arm broken,” declares Yahweh. 26 (BB)Make him drunk, for he has (BC)magnified himself against Yahweh; so Moab will [s]wallow in his vomit, and he also will become a laughingstock. 27 Now was not Israel a (BD)laughingstock to you? Or was he [t](BE)caught among thieves? For each time you speak about him you (BF)shake your head in scorn.

28 Leave the cities and dwell among the (BG)crags,
O inhabitants of Moab,
And be like a (BH)dove that nests
Beyond the mouth of the chasm.
29 (BI)We have heard of the pride of Moab—he is very proud—
Of his haughtiness, his (BJ)pride, his arrogance, and the exaltedness of his heart.
30 I know his (BK)fury,” declares Yahweh,
“But it is nothing;
His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.
31 Therefore I will (BL)wail for Moab,
Even for all Moab will I cry out;
[u]I will moan for the men of (BM)Kir-heres.
32 More than the (BN)weeping for (BO)Jazer
I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah!
Your branches stretched across the sea,
They reached to the sea of Jazer;
Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest
The destroyer has fallen.
33 So (BP)gladness and joy are gathered up
From the fruitful orchard, even from the land of Moab.
And I have made the wine to (BQ)cease from the wine presses;
No one will tread them with shouting,
The shouting will not be shouts of joy.

34 (BR)From the outcry at Heshbon even to (BS)Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have given forth their voice, from (BT)Zoar even to Horonaim and to Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim will become desolate. 35 I will make Moab cease,” declares Yahweh, “the one who offers offerings on the (BU)high place and the one who (BV)offers offerings in smoke to his gods.

36 “Therefore My (BW)heart moans for Moab like flutes; My heart also moans like flutes for the men of Kir-heres. Therefore they have (BX)lost the abundance it produced. 37 For (BY)every head is bald and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands and (BZ)sackcloth on the loins. 38 On all the (CA)rooftops of Moab and in its open squares [v]there is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable (CB)vessel,” declares Yahweh. 39 “How [w]shattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back—he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an (CC)object of terror to all around him.”

40 For thus says Yahweh:

“Behold, one will (CD)swoop like an eagle
And (CE)spread out his wings against Moab.
41 Kerioth has been captured,
And the strongholds have been seized,
So the (CF)hearts of the mighty men of Moab in that day
Will be like the heart of a (CG)woman in labor.
42 Moab will be (CH)destroyed from being a people
Because he has (CI)magnified himself against Yahweh.
43 (CJ)Panic and pit and pitfall are coming upon you,
O inhabitant of Moab,” declares Yahweh.
44 “The one who (CK)flees from the panic
Will fall into the pit,
And the one who climbs up out of the pit
Will be caught in the pitfall;
For I shall bring upon her, even upon Moab,
The year of their (CL)punishment,” declares Yahweh.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
Those who flee stand without strength;
For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon
And a (CM)flame from the midst of (CN)Sihon,
And it has devoured the (CO)top of the head of Moab
And the scalps of [x]those who rumble.
46 (CP)Woe to you, Moab!
The people of (CQ)Chemosh have perished;
For your sons have been taken away captive
And your daughters into captivity.
47 Yet I will [y](CR)return the [z]fortunes of Moab
In the last days,” declares Yahweh.

Thus far the judgment on Moab.

Word Against Ammon

49 Concerning the sons of (CS)Ammon. Thus says Yahweh:

“Does Israel have no sons?
Or has he no one who can take possession?
Why then has [aa]Malcam taken possession of Gad
And his people settled in its cities?
Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh,
“That I will cause a [ab](CT)trumpet blast of war to be heard
Against (CU)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon;
And it will become a desolate heap,
And her (CV)towns will be set on fire.
Then Israel will take (CW)possession of his possessors,”
Says Yahweh.
“Wail, O (CX)Heshbon, for (CY)Ai has been destroyed!
Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah,
(CZ)Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament,
And rush back and forth inside the walls;
For [ac]Malcam will (DA)go into exile
Together with his priests and his princes.
How (DB)boastful you are about the valleys!
Your valley is flowing away,
O (DC)faithless daughter
Who trusts in her (DD)treasures, saying,
(DE)Who will come against me?’
Behold, I am going to bring (DF)dread upon you,”
Declares Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“From all around you;
And each of you will be (DG)banished [ad]headlong,
With no one to gather the (DH)one who flees.
But afterward I will [ae](DI)return
The [af]fortunes of the sons of Ammon,”
Declares Yahweh.

Word Against Edom

Concerning (DJ)Edom.
Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Is there no longer any (DK)wisdom in (DL)Teman?
Has counsel been lost to the understanding?
Has their wisdom decayed?
Flee away, turn back, inhabit the depths,
O inhabitants of (DM)Dedan,
For I [ag]will bring the (DN)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I [ah]punish him.
(DO)If grape gatherers came to you,
Would they not have gleanings remain?
If thieves came by night,
They would ruin only [ai]until they had enough.
10 But I have (DP)stripped Esau bare;
I have uncovered his hiding places,
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His seed has been destroyed along with his [aj]relatives
And his neighbors, and (DQ)he is no more.
11 Leave your [ak](DR)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your (DS)widows trust in Me.”

12 For thus says Yahweh, “Behold, those who are not under judgment to drink the (DT)cup will certainly drink it, but are you the one who will go (DU)completely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but you will certainly drink it. 13 For I have (DV)sworn by Myself,” declares Yahweh, “that (DW)Bozrah will become an (DX)object of horror, a reproach, a ruin, and an imprecation; and all its cities will become perpetual [al]ruins.”

14 I have (DY)heard a message from Yahweh,
And an (DZ)envoy is sent among the nations, saying,
(EA)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among men.
16 As for the terror of you,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
O you who dwell in the clefts of [am]the (EB)rock,
Who seize the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as (EC)high as an eagle’s,
I will (ED)bring you down from there,” declares Yahweh.

17 “Edom will become [an]an (EE)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will [ao]be horrified and will (EF)hiss at all its wounds. 18 Like the (EG)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says Yahweh, “(EH)no one will live there, nor will a son of man sojourn in it. 19 (EI)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [ap](EJ)thickets of the Jordan against an enduring pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (EK)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (EL)like Me, and who will [aq]summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (EM)who can stand against Me?”

20 Therefore hear the (EN)counsel of Yahweh which He has counseled against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture (EO)desolate because of them. 21 The (EP)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the [ar]Red Sea. 22 Behold, [as]He will mount up and (EQ)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings [at]against Bozrah; and the (ER)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

Word Against Damascus

23 Concerning (ES)Damascus.
(ET)Hamath and (EU)Arpad are put to shame,
For they have heard a bad report;
They are (EV)melting away.
There is anxiety by the sea,
It (EW)cannot be quieted.
24 Damascus has become limp in their hands;
She has turned away to flee,
And panic has taken hold of her;
(EX)Distress and pangs have seized her
Like a woman in childbirth.
25 How [au]the (EY)city of praise has not been forsaken,
The town of My joy!
26 Therefore, her (EZ)young men will fall in her open squares,
And all the men of war will be [av]silenced in that day,” declares Yahweh of hosts.
27 “I will (FA)set fire to the wall of Damascus,
And it will devour the [aw]fortified towers of (FB)Ben-hadad.”

Word Against Kedar and Hazor

28 Concerning (FC)Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down. Thus says Yahweh,

“Arise, go up to Kedar
And destroy the [ax](FD)men of the east.
29 They will take away their tents and their flocks;
They will carry off for themselves
Their tent (FE)curtains, all their goods, and their (FF)camels,
And they will call out to one another, ‘(FG)Terror on every side!’
30 Run away, flee earnestly! Inhabit the depths,
O inhabitants of Hazor,” declares Yahweh;
“For (FH)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you
And purposed a purpose against you.
31 Arise, go up against a nation which is (FI)at ease,
Which inhabits its land securely,” declares Yahweh.
“It has (FJ)no gates or bars;
They (FK)dwell alone.
32 Their camels will become plunder,
And their many cattle for spoil,
And I will (FL)scatter to all the winds those who (FM)cut the corners of their hair;
And I will bring their [ay]disaster from every side,” declares Yahweh.
33 “Hazor will become a (FN)haunt of jackals,
A desolation forever;
No one will inhabit there,
Nor will a son of man sojourn in it.”

Word Against Elam

34 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet concerning (FO)Elam, (FP)in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying:

35 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
‘Behold, I am going to (FQ)break the bow of Elam,
The [az]finest of their might.
36 I will bring upon Elam the (FR)four winds
From the four ends of heaven,
And I will (FS)scatter them to all these winds;
And there will be no nation
To which the banished ones of Elam will not go.
37 So I will [ba]shatter Elam before their enemies
And before those who seek their lives;
And I will (FT)bring calamity upon them,
Even My (FU)burning anger,’ declares Yahweh,
‘And I will (FV)send out the sword after them
Until I have consumed them.
38 Then I will set My throne in Elam
And cause king and princes from there to perish,’
Declares Yahweh.
39 ‘But it will be in the last days
That I will [bb](FW)return the [bc]fortunes of Elam,’”
Declares Yahweh.

Word Against Babylon

50 The word which Yahweh spoke concerning (FX)Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet:

(FY)Declare and make it heard among the nations.
Make it heard and (FZ)lift up a standard.
Do not conceal it but say,
(GA)Babylon has been captured;
(GB)Bel has been put to shame; [bd]Marduk has been [be]shattered;
Her (GC)images have been put to shame; her idols have been shattered.’

For a nation has come up against her out of the (GD)north; it will make her land (GE)an object of horror, and there will be (GF)no inhabitant in it. Both man and beast have wandered off; they have gone away!

“In those days and at that time,” declares Yahweh, “the sons of Israel will come, both they and the sons of Judah (GG)as well; they will go along (GH)weeping as they go, and it will be (GI)Yahweh their God they will seek. They will (GJ)ask for the way to Zion—turning their faces [bf]in its direction and saying, ‘[bg]Come!’—in order that they may join themselves to Yahweh in an (GK)everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.

“My people have become (GL)lost sheep;
(GM)Their shepherds have led them astray.
They have made them turn away on the (GN)mountains;
They have gone along from mountain to hill
And have forgotten their (GO)resting place.
All who came out against them have devoured them;
And their adversaries have said, ‘(GP)We are not guilty,
Inasmuch as they have sinned against Yahweh, who is the (GQ)abode of righteousness,
Even Yahweh, the (GR)hope of their fathers.’

“Wander away from the (GS)midst of Babylon
And [bh]go forth from the land of the Chaldeans;
Be also like male goats [bi]at the head of the flock.
For behold, I am going to (GT)arouse and bring up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the land of the north,
And they will arrange their battle lines against her;
From there she will be taken captive.
Their arrows will be like [bj]a warrior who makes one childless
Who does not return empty-handed.
10 [bk](GU)Chaldea will become spoil;
All who take her spoil will have enough,” declares Yahweh.

11 “Because you are glad, because you exult,
O you who (GV)plunder My inheritance,
Because you skip about [bl]like a threshing (GW)heifer
And neigh like [bm]valiant steeds,
12 Your (GX)mother [bn]will be greatly ashamed;
She who gave you birth [bo]will be humiliated.
Behold, she will be the least of the nations,
A (GY)wilderness, a parched land, and a desert.
13 Because of the wrath of Yahweh she will (GZ)not be inhabited,
But she will be (HA)completely desolate;
Everyone who passes by Babylon (HB)will be in desolation
And will hiss because of all her wounds.
14 Arrange your battle lines against Babylon on every side,
All you who [bp]bend the bow;
Shoot at her, do not be sparing with your arrows,
For she has (HC)sinned against Yahweh.
15 Raise a loud shout against her on every side!
She has (HD)given [bq]herself up, her pillars have fallen,
Her (HE)walls have been pulled down.
For this is the (HF)vengeance of Yahweh:
Take vengeance on her;
(HG)As she has done to others, so do to her.
16 Cut off the (HH)sower from Babylon
And the one who seizes the sickle at the time of harvest;
From before [br]the (HI)sword of the oppressor
(HJ)They will each turn back to his own people,
And they will each flee to his own land.

17 “Israel is a (HK)scattered [bs]flock; the (HL)lions have banished them away. The first one who devoured him was the (HM)king of Assyria, and this last one who has broken his bones is (HN)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 18 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I (HO)punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will [bt](HP)return Israel back to his pasture, and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and his [bu]desire will be satisfied in the (HQ)hill country of Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days and at that time,’ declares Yahweh, ‘search will be made for the iniquity of Israel, but (HR)there will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will pardon those (HS)whom I leave as a remnant.’

21 “Against the land of [bv]Merathaim, go up against it,
And against the inhabitants of [bw](HT)Pekod.
Put them to the sword and [bx]devote them to destruction,” declares Yahweh,
“And do according to all that I have commanded you.
22 The (HU)noise of battle is in the land,
And great destruction.
23 How the (HV)hammer of the whole earth
Has been cut in pieces and broken!
How Babylon has become
An object of horror among the nations!
24 I (HW)set a snare for you, and you were also (HX)caught, O Babylon,
But you yourself did not know;
You have been found and also seized
Because you have engaged in (HY)conflict with Yahweh.”
25 Yahweh has opened His armory
And has brought forth the (HZ)weapons of His indignation,
For it is a (IA)work of Lord Yahweh of hosts
In the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come to her from the [by]farthest border;
(IB)Open up her barns;
Pile her up like heaps,
And [bz](IC)devote her to destruction;
Let nothing of her remain.
27 (ID)Put all her young bulls to the sword;
Let them (IE)go down to the slaughter!
Woe be upon them, for their (IF)day has come,
The time of their punishment.

28 There is a (IG)sound of those who flee and escape from the land of Babylon,
To declare in Zion the (IH)vengeance of Yahweh our God,
Vengeance for His (II)temple.

29 “Summon [ca]many against Babylon,
All those who [cb]bend the bow:
Encamp against her on every side,
Let there be no escape[cc].
Repay her according to her work;
(IJ)According to all that she has done, so do to her;
For she has become (IK)arrogant against Yahweh,
Against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore her (IL)young men will fall in her open squares,
And all her men of war will be [cd](IM)silenced in that day,” declares Yahweh.
31 “Behold, (IN)I am against you, O [ce]arrogant one,”
Declares Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“For your day has come,
The time [cf]when I will punish you.
32 The [cg](IO)arrogant one will stumble and fall
With no one to raise him up;
And I will (IP)set fire to his cities,
And it will devour him on every side.”

33 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,

“The sons of Israel are oppressed,
And the sons of Judah as well;
And (IQ)all who took them captive have held them fast;
They have refused to let them go.
34 Their (IR)Redeemer is strong, (IS)Yahweh of hosts is His name;
He will vigorously (IT)plead their case
So that He may (IU)bring relief to [ch]the earth,
But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A (IV)sword against the Chaldeans,” declares Yahweh,
“And against the inhabitants of Babylon
And against her (IW)officials and her (IX)wise men!
36 A sword against the (IY)oracle priests, and they will become fools!
A sword against her (IZ)mighty men, and they will be [ci](JA)shattered!
37 A sword against [cj]their (JB)horses and against [ck]their chariots
And against all the [cl](JC)foreigners who are in the midst of her,
And they will become (JD)women!
A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered!
38 A [cm](JE)drought on her waters, and they will be dried up!
For it is a land of (JF)graven images,
And they are mad over terrifying idols.

39 “Therefore the (JG)desert creatures will live there along with the jackals;
The ostriches also will live in it,
And it will (JH)never again be lived in
Or dwelt in from generation to generation.
40 As when God overthrew (JI)Sodom
And Gomorrah with its neighbors,” declares Yahweh,
“No man will live there,
Nor will any son of man sojourn in it.

41 “Behold, a people is coming (JJ)from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Will be aroused from the remote parts of the earth.
42 They (JK)seize their bow and [cn]javelin;
They are (JL)cruel and have no compassion.
Their (JM)voice roars like the sea;
And they ride on (JN)horses,
(JO)Arranged like a man for the battle
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The (JP)king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands hang limp;
(JQ)Distress has taken hold of him,
Agony like a woman in childbirth.

44 (JR)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [co]thicket of the Jordan to an enduring pasture; for in an instant I will make them run away from it, and whoever is (JS)chosen I will appoint over it. For who is (JT)like Me, and who will [cp]summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can (JU)stand before Me?” 45 Therefore hear the (JV)counsel of Yahweh which He has counseled against Babylon, and His purposes which He has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: (JW)surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their [cq]pasture desolate because of them. 46 At the sound, “Babylon has been seized!” the (JX)earth is shaken, and an (JY)outcry is heard among the nations.

Yahweh Sends Calamity to Babylon

51 Thus says Yahweh:

“Behold, I am going to arouse against Babylon
And against the inhabitants of [cr]Leb-kamai
[cs]The (JZ)spirit of a destroyer.
I will send [ct]strangers to Babylon that they may (KA)winnow her
And may empty her land to destruction;
For on every side they will be against her
In the day of her calamity.
[cu]Let not [cv]him who [cw](KB)bends his bow [cx]bend it,
[cy]Nor let him rise up in his (KC)scale-armor;
So do not spare her young men;
Devote all her army to destruction.
They will fall down [cz]slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
And (KD)pierced through in their streets.”

For (KE)neither Israel nor Judah has been widowed
By his God, by Yahweh of hosts,
Although their land is (KF)full of guilt
[da]Before the Holy One of Israel.
(KG)Flee from the midst of Babylon,
And each of you escape with his life!
Do not be [db](KH)silenced in her [dc]iniquity,
For this is (KI)Yahweh’s time of vengeance;
He is going to (KJ)render recompense to her.
Babylon has been a golden (KK)cup in the hand of Yahweh,
Intoxicating all the earth.
The (KL)nations have drunk of her wine;
Therefore the nations are (KM)going mad.
Suddenly (KN)Babylon has fallen and been broken;
(KO)Wail over her!
(KP)Take [dd]balm for her pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.
We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
Forsake her and (KQ)let us each go to his own country,
For her judgment has (KR)touched heaven
And lifts up to the very skies.
10 Yahweh has (KS)brought [de]about our righteousness;
Come and let us (KT)recount in Zion
The work of Yahweh our God!

11 (KU)Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
Yahweh has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes
Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;
For it is the (KV)vengeance of Yahweh, vengeance for His temple.
12 (KW)Lift up a standard against the walls of Babylon;
Make strong the watch;
Raise up [df]watchmen;
Establish men in ambush!
For Yahweh has both (KX)purposed and performed
What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 O you who (KY)dwell by abundant waters,
Abundant in (KZ)treasures,
Your end has come,
The [dg]measure of your [dh](LA)end.
14 (LB)Yahweh of hosts has sworn by Himself:
“Surely I will fill you with a [di]population like (LC)locusts,
And they will cry out with [dj]shouts of victory over you.”

15 It is (LD)He who made the earth by His power,
Who established the world by His wisdom,
And by His understanding He (LE)stretched out the heavens.
16 When He gives forth His (LF)voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the (LG)clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain
And brings forth the (LH)wind from His storehouses.
17 (LI)All mankind is senseless, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image,
For his molten images are (LJ)a lie,
And there is no breath in them.
18 They are (LK)vanity, a work of mockery;
In the time of their punishment they will perish.
19 The (LL)portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the [dk]Maker of all is He,
And of the [dl]tribe of His inheritance;
(LM)Yahweh of hosts is His name.
20 He says, “You are My (LN)instrument of shattering, My weapon of war;
And with you I (LO)shatter nations,
And with you I destroy kingdoms.
21 With you I (LP)shatter the horse and his rider,
And with you I shatter the (LQ)chariot and its rider,
22 And with you I shatter (LR)man and woman,
And with you I shatter old man and (LS)youth,
And with you I shatter choice man and virgin,
23 And with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
And with you I shatter the farmer and his pair of oxen,
And with you I shatter governors and prefects.

24 “But I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of (LT)Chaldea for (LU)all their evil that they have done in Zion before your eyes,” declares Yahweh.

25 “Behold, (LV)I am against you, (LW)O destroying mountain,
Who destroys the whole earth,” declares Yahweh,
“And I will stretch out My hand against you
And roll you down from the crags,
And I will make you a (LX)burnt out mountain.
26 They will not take from you even a stone for a corner
Nor a stone for foundations,
But you will be a perpetual (LY)desolation,” declares Yahweh.

27 (LZ)Lift up a standard in the land,
Blow a trumpet among the nations!
Set apart the nations against her;
Summon against her the (MA)kingdoms of (MB)Ararat, Minni, and (MC)Ashkenaz;
Appoint a marshal against her;
Bring up the (MD)horses like bristly locusts.
28 Set apart the nations against her,
The kings of the Medes,
[dm]Their governors and all [dn]their [do]prefects
And every land of [dp]their rule.
29 So the (ME)land quakes and writhes,
For the purposes of Yahweh against Babylon stand,
To make the land of Babylon
[dq]A (MF)desolation without inhabitants.
30 The (MG)mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting;
They inhabit the strongholds;
(MH)Their might is dried up;
They are becoming (MI)like women;
Their dwelling places are set on fire;
The (MJ)bars of her gates are broken.
31 One (MK)runner runs to meet [dr]another,
And one (ML)messenger to meet [ds]another,
To give a message to the king of Babylon
That his city has been captured from end to end;
32 The fords also have been seized,
And they have burned the marshes with fire,
And the men of war are terrified.

33 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel:

“The daughter of Babylon is like a (MM)threshing floor
At the time [dt]it is stamped firm;
Yet in a little while the time of (MN)harvest will come for her.”

34 “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has (MO)devoured me and brought me into confusion;
He has set me down like an (MP)empty vessel;
He has (MQ)swallowed me like a sea monster;
He has filled his stomach with my delicacies;
He has rinsed me away.
35 May the (MR)violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,”
The [du]inhabitant of Zion will say;
And, “May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
Jerusalem will say.

36 Therefore thus says Yahweh,

“Behold, I am going to (MS)plead your case
And (MT)exact full vengeance for you;
And (MU)I will dry up her [dv]sea
And make her fountain dry.
37 (MV)Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals,
An (MW)object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.
38 They will roar together like (MX)young lions;
They will growl like lions’ cubs.
39 When they become heated up, I will set before them their feast
And (MY)make them drunk, that they may exult
And may (MZ)sleep a perpetual sleep
And not wake up,” declares Yahweh.
40 “I will bring them down like [dw]lambs (NA)to the slaughter,
Like rams together with male goats.

41 “How [dx](NB)Sheshak has been captured,
And (NC)the praise of the whole earth been seized!
How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations!
42 The [dy](ND)sea has come up over Babylon;
She has been covered with its tumultuous waves.
43 Her cities have become an (NE)object of horror,
A parched land, and a desert,
A land in which (NF)no man lives
And through which no son of man passes.
44 (NG)I will punish Bel in Babylon,
And I will make what he has swallowed (NH)come out of his mouth;
And the nations will no longer (NI)stream to him.
Even the (NJ)wall of Babylon has fallen down!

45 (NK)Come forth from her midst, My people,
And each of you (NL)escape with his life
From the burning anger of Yahweh.
46 Now (NM)lest your heart grow faint,
And you fear the (NN)report that will be heard in the land—
For the report will come [dz]one year,
And after that [ea]another report in [eb]another year,
And violence will be in the land
With (NO)ruler against ruler—
47 Therefore behold, days are coming
When I will punish the (NP)graven images of Babylon;
And her whole land will be (NQ)put to shame,
And all her slain will fall in her midst.
48 Then (NR)heaven and earth and all that is in them
Will shout for joy over Babylon,
For (NS)the destroyers will come to her from the north,”
Declares Yahweh.

49 (NT)Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel,
As also for Babylon (NU)the slain of all the earth have fallen.
50 You (NV)who have escaped the sword,
Go! Do not stand around!
(NW)Remember Yahweh from afar,
And let Jerusalem come upon your heart.
51 (NX)We are ashamed because we have heard reproach;
Dishonor has covered our faces,
For (NY)strangers have entered
The holy places of the house of Yahweh.

52 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh,
“When I will punish her (NZ)graven images,
And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.
53 Though Babylon should (OA)ascend to the heavens,
And though she should fortify [ec]her lofty stronghold,
From (OB)Me destroyers will come to her,” declares Yahweh.

54 The (OC)sound of an outcry from Babylon,
And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55 For Yahweh is going to destroy Babylon,
And He will make her loud [ed]noise [ee]vanish from her.
And their (OD)waves will roar like many waters;
The rumbling of their voices [ef]sounds forth.
56 For the (OE)destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon,
And her mighty men will be captured;
Their (OF)bows are shattered;
For Yahweh is a God of (OG)recompense,
He will fully repay.
57 “I will (OH)make her princes and her wise men drunk,
Her governors, her prefects, and her mighty men,
That they may sleep a (OI)perpetual sleep and not wake up,”
(OJ)Declares the King, whose name is Yahweh of hosts.

58 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,

“The broad (OK)wall of Babylon will be completely razed,
And her high (OL)gates will be set on fire;
So the peoples will (OM)toil for nothing,
And the nations become (ON)weary only for fire.”

59 The [eg]message which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of (OO)Neriah, the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with (OP)Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. (Now Seraiah was quartermaster.) 60 So Jeremiah (OQ)wrote in a single [eh]scroll all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. 61 Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud, 62 and then you will say, ‘You, O Yahweh, have [ei]promised concerning this place to (OR)cut it off, so that there will be (OS)nothing inhabiting it, [ej]whether man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.’ 63 And as soon as you finish reading this [ek]scroll, you will tie a stone to it and (OT)throw it into the middle of the Euphrates, 64 and then you will say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and (OU)not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become (OV)utterly weary.’” (OW)Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

A Message About the Philistines

47 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines(A) before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:(B)

This is what the Lord says:

“See how the waters are rising in the north;(C)
    they will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
    the towns and those who live in them.
The people will cry out;
    all who dwell in the land will wail(D)
at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds,
    at the noise of enemy chariots(E)
    and the rumble of their wheels.
Parents will not turn to help their children;
    their hands will hang limp.(F)
For the day has come
    to destroy all the Philistines
and to remove all survivors
    who could help Tyre(G) and Sidon.(H)
The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,(I)
    the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.[a](J)
Gaza will shave(K) her head in mourning;
    Ashkelon(L) will be silenced.
You remnant on the plain,
    how long will you cut(M) yourselves?

“‘Alas, sword(N) of the Lord,
    how long till you rest?
Return to your sheath;
    cease and be still.’(O)
But how can it rest
    when the Lord has commanded it,
when he has ordered it
    to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”(P)

A Message About Moab(Q)

48 Concerning Moab:(R)

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo,(S) for it will be ruined.
    Kiriathaim(T) will be disgraced and captured;
    the stronghold[b] will be disgraced and shattered.
Moab will be praised(U) no more;
    in Heshbon[c](V) people will plot her downfall:
    ‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(W)
You, the people of Madmen,[d] will also be silenced;
    the sword will pursue you.
Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(X)
    cries of great havoc and destruction.
Moab will be broken;
    her little ones will cry out.[e]
They go up the hill to Luhith,(Y)
    weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(Z)
    anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
Flee!(AA) Run for your lives;
    become like a bush[f] in the desert.(AB)
Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(AC)
    you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(AD) will go into exile,(AE)
    together with his priests and officials.(AF)
The destroyer(AG) will come against every town,
    and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
    and the plateau(AH) destroyed,
    because the Lord has spoken.
Put salt(AI) on Moab,
    for she will be laid waste[g];(AJ)
her towns will become desolate,
    with no one to live in them.

10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
    A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(AK) from bloodshed!(AL)

11 “Moab has been at rest(AM) from youth,
    like wine left on its dregs,(AN)
not poured from one jar to another—
    she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
    and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
    and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
    and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(AO) of Chemosh,(AP)
    as Israel was ashamed
    when they trusted in Bethel.(AQ)

14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AR)
    men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
    her finest young men(AS) will go down in the slaughter,(AT)
    declares the King,(AU) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AV)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AW)
    her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
    all who know her fame;(AX)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AY)
    how broken the glorious staff!’

18 “Come down from your glory
    and sit on the parched ground,(AZ)
    you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(BA)
for the one who destroys Moab
    will come up against you
    and ruin your fortified cities.(BB)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
    you who live in Aroer.(BC)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
    ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
    Wail(BD) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(BE)
    that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(BF)
    to Holon,(BG) Jahzah(BH) and Mephaath,(BI)
22     to Dibon,(BJ) Nebo(BK) and Beth Diblathaim,
23     to Kiriathaim,(BL) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(BM)
24     to Kerioth(BN) and Bozrah(BO)
    to all the towns(BP) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[h](BQ) is cut off;
    her arm(BR) is broken,”
declares the Lord.

26 “Make her drunk,(BS)
    for she has defied(BT) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BU)
    let her be an object of ridicule.(BV)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BW)
    Was she caught among thieves,(BX)
that you shake your head(BY) in scorn(BZ)
    whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
    you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(CA) that makes its nest
    at the mouth of a cave.(CB)

29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(CC)
    how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
    and the haughtiness(CD) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
    “and her boasts(CE) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(CF) over Moab,
    for all Moab I cry out,
    I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CG)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(CH) weeps,
    you vines of Sibmah.(CI)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[i];
    they reached as far as[j] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
    on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
    from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(CJ) from the presses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy.(CK)
Although there are shouts,
    they are not shouts of joy.

34 “The sound of their cry rises
    from Heshbon(CL) to Elealeh(CM) and Jahaz,(CN)
from Zoar(CO) as far as Horonaim(CP) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
    for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CQ)
35 In Moab I will put an end
    to those who make offerings on the high places(CR)
    and burn incense(CS) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CT) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
    it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CU)
    The wealth they acquired(CV) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CW)
    and every beard(CX) cut off;
every hand is slashed
    and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CY)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
    and in the public squares(CZ)
there is nothing but mourning,
    for I have broken Moab
    like a jar(DA) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(DB) she is! How they wail!
    How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(DC)
    an object of horror to all those around her.”

40 This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping(DD) down,
    spreading its wings(DE) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[k](DF) will be captured
    and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(DG)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(DH)
42 Moab will be destroyed(DI) as a nation(DJ)
    because she defied(DK) the Lord.
43 Terror(DL) and pit and snare(DM) await you,
    you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(DN) from the terror
    will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
    will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
    the year(DO) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
    the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(DP)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
    the skulls(DQ) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DR)
    The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
    and your daughters into captivity.

47 “Yet I will restore(DS) the fortunes of Moab
    in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

Here ends the judgment on Moab.

A Message About Ammon

49 Concerning the Ammonites:(DT)

This is what the Lord says:

“Has Israel no sons?
    Has Israel no heir?
Why then has Molek[l](DU) taken possession of Gad?(DV)
    Why do his people live in its towns?
But the days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will sound the battle cry(DW)
    against Rabbah(DX) of the Ammonites;
it will become a mound of ruins,(DY)
    and its surrounding villages will be set on fire.
Then Israel will drive out
    those who drove her out,(DZ)
says the Lord.
“Wail, Heshbon,(EA) for Ai(EB) is destroyed!
    Cry out, you inhabitants of Rabbah!
Put on sackcloth(EC) and mourn;
    rush here and there inside the walls,
for Molek(ED) will go into exile,(EE)
    together with his priests and officials.
Why do you boast of your valleys,
    boast of your valleys so fruitful?
Unfaithful Daughter Ammon,(EF)
    you trust in your riches(EG) and say,
    ‘Who will attack me?’(EH)
I will bring terror on you
    from all those around you,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
“Every one of you will be driven away,
    and no one will gather the fugitives.(EI)

“Yet afterward, I will restore(EJ) the fortunes of the Ammonites,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Edom(EK)(EL)

Concerning Edom:(EM)

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?(EN)
    Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    Has their wisdom decayed?
Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,(EO)
    you who live in Dedan,(EP)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
    at the time when I punish him.
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
    I will uncover his hiding places,(EQ)
    so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
    also his allies and neighbors,
    so there is no one(ER) to say,
11 ‘Leave your fatherless children;(ES) I will keep them alive.
    Your widows(ET) too can depend on me.’”

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup(EU) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?(EV) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear(EW) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah(EX) will become a ruin and a curse,[m] an object of horror(EY) and reproach;(EZ) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”(FA)

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;
    an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
    Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,
    despised by mankind.
16 The terror you inspire
    and the pride(FB) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,(FC)
    who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest(FD) as high as the eagle’s,
    from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror;(FE)
    all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
    because of all its wounds.(FF)
18 As Sodom(FG) and Gomorrah(FH) were overthrown,
    along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell(FI) in it.

19 “Like a lion(FJ) coming up from Jordan’s thickets(FK)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like(FL) me and who can challenge me?(FM)
    And what shepherd(FN) can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,(FO)
    what he has purposed(FP) against those who live in Teman:(FQ)
The young of the flock(FR) will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.(FS)
21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;(FT)
    their cry(FU) will resound to the Red Sea.[n]
22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop(FV) down,
    spreading its wings over Bozrah.(FW)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors(FX)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(FY)

A Message About Damascus

23 Concerning Damascus:(FZ)

“Hamath(GA) and Arpad(GB) are dismayed,
    for they have heard bad news.
They are disheartened,
    troubled like[o] the restless sea.(GC)
24 Damascus has become feeble,
    she has turned to flee
    and panic has gripped her;
anguish and pain have seized her,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(GD)
25 Why has the city of renown not been abandoned,
    the town in which I delight?
26 Surely, her young men(GE) will fall in the streets;
    all her soldiers will be silenced(GF) in that day,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
27 “I will set fire(GG) to the walls of Damascus;(GH)
    it will consume(GI) the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.(GJ)

A Message About Kedar and Hazor

28 Concerning Kedar(GK) and the kingdoms of Hazor,(GL) which Nebuchadnezzar(GM) king of Babylon attacked:

This is what the Lord says:

“Arise, and attack Kedar
    and destroy the people of the East.(GN)
29 Their tents and their flocks(GO) will be taken;
    their shelters will be carried off
    with all their goods and camels.
People will shout to them,
    ‘Terror(GP) on every side!’

30 “Flee quickly away!
    Stay in deep caves,(GQ) you who live in Hazor,(GR)
declares the Lord.
“Nebuchadnezzar(GS) king of Babylon has plotted against you;
    he has devised a plan against you.

31 “Arise and attack a nation at ease,
    which lives in confidence,”
declares the Lord,
“a nation that has neither gates nor bars;(GT)
    its people live far from danger.
32 Their camels(GU) will become plunder,
    and their large herds(GV) will be spoils of war.
I will scatter to the winds(GW) those who are in distant places[p](GX)
    and will bring disaster on them from every side,”
declares the Lord.
33 “Hazor(GY) will become a haunt of jackals,(GZ)
    a desolate(HA) place forever.
No one will live there;
    no people will dwell(HB) in it.”

A Message About Elam

34 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam,(HC) early in the reign of Zedekiah(HD) king of Judah:

35 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“See, I will break the bow(HE) of Elam,
    the mainstay of their might.
36 I will bring against Elam the four winds(HF)
    from the four quarters of heaven;(HG)
I will scatter them to the four winds,
    and there will not be a nation
    where Elam’s exiles do not go.
37 I will shatter Elam before their foes,
    before those who want to kill them;
I will bring disaster on them,
    even my fierce anger,”(HH)
declares the Lord.
“I will pursue them with the sword(HI)
    until I have made an end of them.
38 I will set my throne in Elam
    and destroy her king and officials,”
declares the Lord.

39 “Yet I will restore(HJ) the fortunes of Elam
    in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Babylon(HK)

50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(HL) and the land of the Babylonians[q]:

“Announce and proclaim(HM) among the nations,
    lift up a banner(HN) and proclaim it;
    keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(HO)
    Bel(HP) will be put to shame,(HQ)
    Marduk(HR) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
    and her idols(HS) filled with terror.’
A nation from the north(HT) will attack her
    and lay waste her land.
No one will live(HU) in it;
    both people and animals(HV) will flee away.

“In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(HW)
    will go in tears(HX) to seek(HY) the Lord their God.
They will ask the way(HZ) to Zion
    and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(IA) and bind themselves to the Lord
    in an everlasting covenant(IB)
    that will not be forgotten.

“My people have been lost sheep;(IC)
    their shepherds(ID) have led them astray(IE)
    and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(IF)
    and forgot their own resting place.(IG)
Whoever found them devoured(IH) them;
    their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(II)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
    the Lord, the hope(IJ) of their ancestors.’

“Flee(IK) out of Babylon;(IL)
    leave the land of the Babylonians,
    and be like the goats that lead the flock.
For I will stir(IM) up and bring against Babylon
    an alliance of great nations(IN) from the land of the north.(IO)
They will take up their positions against her,
    and from the north she will be captured.(IP)
Their arrows(IQ) will be like skilled warriors
    who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[r] will be plundered;(IR)
    all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.

11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
    you who pillage my inheritance,(IS)
because you frolic like a heifer(IT) threshing grain
    and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
    she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(IU)
She will be the least of the nations—
    a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(IV)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
    but will be completely desolate.(IW)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(IX)
    they will scoff(IY) because of all her wounds.(IZ)

14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
    all you who draw the bow.(JA)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(JB)
    for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(JC) against her on every side!
    She surrenders, her towers fall,
    her walls(JD) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(JE) of the Lord,
    take vengeance on her;
    do to her(JF) as she has done to others.(JG)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
    and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(JH) of the oppressor
    let everyone return to their own people,(JI)
    let everyone flee to their own land.(JJ)

17 “Israel is a scattered flock(JK)
    that lions(JL) have chased away.
The first to devour(JM) them
    was the king(JN) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(JO)
    was Nebuchadnezzar(JP) king(JQ) of Babylon.”

18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
    as I punished the king(JR) of Assyria.(JS)
19 But I will bring(JT) Israel back to their own pasture,
    and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(JU)
    on the hills(JV) of Ephraim and Gilead.(JW)
20 In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
    but there will be none,(JX)
and for the sins(JY) of Judah,
    but none will be found,
    for I will forgive(JZ) the remnant(KA) I spare.

21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
    and those who live in Pekod.(KB)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[s] them,”
declares the Lord.
    “Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(KC) of battle is in the land,
    the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
    is the hammer(KD) of the whole earth!(KE)
How desolate(KF) is Babylon
    among the nations!
24 I set a trap(KG) for you, Babylon,
    and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(KH)
    because you opposed(KI) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
    and brought out the weapons(KJ) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
    in the land of the Babylonians.(KK)
26 Come against her from afar.(KL)
    Break open her granaries;
    pile her up like heaps of grain.(KM)
Completely destroy(KN) her
    and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(KO)
    let them go down to the slaughter!(KP)
Woe to them! For their day(KQ) has come,
    the time(KR) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(KS) and refugees from Babylon
    declaring in Zion(KT)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(KU)
    vengeance for his temple.(KV)

29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
    all those who draw the bow.(KW)
Encamp all around her;
    let no one escape.(KX)
Repay(KY) her for her deeds;(KZ)
    do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(LA) the Lord,
    the Holy One(LB) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(LC) will fall in the streets;
    all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(LD) you, you arrogant one,”
    declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(LE) has come,
    the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(LF) one will stumble and fall(LG)
    and no one will help her up;(LH)
I will kindle a fire(LI) in her towns
    that will consume all who are around her.”

33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“The people of Israel are oppressed,(LJ)
    and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
    refusing to let them go.(LK)
34 Yet their Redeemer(LL) is strong;
    the Lord Almighty(LM) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(LN)
    so that he may bring rest(LO) to their land,
    but unrest to those who live in Babylon.

35 “A sword(LP) against the Babylonians!”(LQ)
    declares the Lord
“against those who live in Babylon
    and against her officials and wise(LR) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
    They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(LS)
    They will be filled with terror.(LT)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(LU)
    and all the foreigners in her ranks!
    They will become weaklings.(LV)
A sword against her treasures!(LW)
    They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[t] her waters!(LX)
    They will dry(LY) up.
For it is a land of idols,(LZ)
    idols that will go mad with terror.

39 “So desert creatures(MA) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.(MB)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(MC)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.(MD)

41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(ME)
    a great nation and many kings
    are being stirred(MF) up from the ends of the earth.(MG)
42 They are armed with bows(MH) and spears;
    they are cruel(MI) and without mercy.(MJ)
They sound like the roaring sea(MK)
    as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(ML)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
    and his hands hang limp.(MM)
Anguish has gripped him,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(MN)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(MO)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen(MP) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(MQ)
    And what shepherd can stand against me?”

45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
    what he has purposed(MR) against the land of the Babylonians:(MS)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(MT)
    its cry(MU) will resound among the nations.

51 This is what the Lord says:

“See, I will stir(MV) up the spirit of a destroyer
    against Babylon(MW) and the people of Leb Kamai.[u]
I will send foreigners(MX) to Babylon
    to winnow(MY) her and to devastate her land;
they will oppose her on every side
    in the day(MZ) of her disaster.
Let not the archer string his bow,(NA)
    nor let him put on his armor.(NB)
Do not spare her young men;
    completely destroy[v] her army.
They will fall(NC) down slain in Babylon,[w]
    fatally wounded in her streets.(ND)
For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken(NE)
    by their God, the Lord Almighty,
though their land[x] is full of guilt(NF)
    before the Holy One of Israel.

“Flee(NG) from Babylon!
    Run for your lives!
    Do not be destroyed because of her sins.(NH)
It is time(NI) for the Lord’s vengeance;(NJ)
    he will repay(NK) her what she deserves.
Babylon was a gold cup(NL) in the Lord’s hand;
    she made the whole earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
    therefore they have now gone mad.
Babylon will suddenly fall(NM) and be broken.
    Wail over her!
Get balm(NN) for her pain;
    perhaps she can be healed.

“‘We would have healed Babylon,
    but she cannot be healed;
let us leave(NO) her and each go to our own land,
    for her judgment(NP) reaches to the skies,
    it rises as high as the heavens.’

10 “‘The Lord has vindicated(NQ) us;
    come, let us tell in Zion
    what the Lord our God has done.’(NR)

11 “Sharpen the arrows,(NS)
    take up the shields!(NT)
The Lord has stirred up the kings(NU) of the Medes,(NV)
    because his purpose(NW) is to destroy Babylon.
The Lord will take vengeance,(NX)
    vengeance for his temple.(NY)
12 Lift up a banner(NZ) against the walls of Babylon!
    Reinforce the guard,
station the watchmen,(OA)
    prepare an ambush!(OB)
The Lord will carry out his purpose,(OC)
    his decree against the people of Babylon.
13 You who live by many waters(OD)
    and are rich in treasures,(OE)
your end has come,
    the time for you to be destroyed.(OF)
14 The Lord Almighty has sworn by himself:(OG)
    I will surely fill you with troops, as with a swarm of locusts,(OH)
    and they will shout(OI) in triumph over you.

15 “He made the earth by his power;
    he founded the world by his wisdom(OJ)
    and stretched(OK) out the heavens by his understanding.(OL)
16 When he thunders,(OM) the waters in the heavens roar;
    he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning with the rain(ON)
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(OO)

17 “Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
    every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(OP)
    they have no breath in them.
18 They are worthless,(OQ) the objects of mockery;
    when their judgment comes, they will perish.
19 He who is the Portion(OR) of Jacob is not like these,
    for he is the Maker of all things,
including the people of his inheritance(OS)
    the Lord Almighty is his name.

20 “You are my war club,(OT)
    my weapon for battle—
with you I shatter(OU) nations,(OV)
    with you I destroy kingdoms,
21 with you I shatter horse and rider,(OW)
    with you I shatter chariot(OX) and driver,
22 with you I shatter man and woman,
    with you I shatter old man and youth,
    with you I shatter young man and young woman,(OY)
23 with you I shatter shepherd and flock,
    with you I shatter farmer and oxen,
    with you I shatter governors and officials.(OZ)

24 “Before your eyes I will repay(PA) Babylon(PB) and all who live in Babylonia[y] for all the wrong they have done in Zion,” declares the Lord.

25 “I am against(PC) you, you destroying mountain,
    you who destroy the whole earth,”(PD)
declares the Lord.
“I will stretch out my hand(PE) against you,
    roll you off the cliffs,
    and make you a burned-out mountain.(PF)
26 No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone,
    nor any stone for a foundation,
    for you will be desolate(PG) forever,”
declares the Lord.

27 “Lift up a banner(PH) in the land!
    Blow the trumpet among the nations!
Prepare the nations for battle against her;
    summon against her these kingdoms:(PI)
    Ararat,(PJ) Minni and Ashkenaz.(PK)
Appoint a commander against her;
    send up horses like a swarm of locusts.(PL)
28 Prepare the nations for battle against her—
    the kings of the Medes,(PM)
their governors and all their officials,
    and all the countries they rule.(PN)
29 The land trembles(PO) and writhes,
    for the Lord’s purposes(PP) against Babylon stand—
to lay waste(PQ) the land of Babylon
    so that no one will live there.(PR)
30 Babylon’s warriors(PS) have stopped fighting;
    they remain in their strongholds.
Their strength is exhausted;
    they have become weaklings.(PT)
Her dwellings are set on fire;(PU)
    the bars(PV) of her gates are broken.
31 One courier(PW) follows another
    and messenger follows messenger
to announce to the king of Babylon
    that his entire city is captured,(PX)
32 the river crossings seized,
    the marshes set on fire,(PY)
    and the soldiers terrified.(PZ)

33 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Daughter Babylon(QA) is like a threshing floor(QB)
    at the time it is trampled;
    the time to harvest(QC) her will soon come.(QD)

34 “Nebuchadnezzar(QE) king of Babylon has devoured(QF) us,(QG)
    he has thrown us into confusion,
    he has made us an empty jar.
Like a serpent he has swallowed us
    and filled his stomach with our delicacies,
    and then has spewed(QH) us out.
35 May the violence(QI) done to our flesh[z] be on Babylon,”
    say the inhabitants of Zion.
“May our blood be on those who live in Babylonia,”
    says Jerusalem.(QJ)

36 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“See, I will defend your cause(QK)
    and avenge(QL) you;
I will dry up(QM) her sea
    and make her springs dry.
37 Babylon will be a heap of ruins,
    a haunt(QN) of jackals,
an object of horror and scorn,(QO)
    a place where no one lives.(QP)
38 Her people all roar like young lions,(QQ)
    they growl like lion cubs.
39 But while they are aroused,
    I will set out a feast for them
    and make them drunk,(QR)
so that they shout with laughter—
    then sleep forever(QS) and not awake,”
declares the Lord.(QT)
40 “I will bring them down
    like lambs to the slaughter,
    like rams and goats.(QU)

41 “How Sheshak[aa](QV) will be captured,(QW)
    the boast of the whole earth seized!
How desolate(QX) Babylon will be
    among the nations!
42 The sea will rise over Babylon;
    its roaring waves(QY) will cover her.
43 Her towns will be desolate,
    a dry and desert(QZ) land,
a land where no one lives,
    through which no one travels.(RA)
44 I will punish Bel(RB) in Babylon
    and make him spew out(RC) what he has swallowed.
The nations will no longer stream to him.
    And the wall(RD) of Babylon will fall.

45 “Come out(RE) of her, my people!
    Run(RF) for your lives!
    Run from the fierce anger(RG) of the Lord.
46 Do not lose heart(RH) or be afraid(RI)
    when rumors(RJ) are heard in the land;
one rumor comes this year, another the next,
    rumors of violence in the land
    and of ruler against ruler.
47 For the time will surely come
    when I will punish the idols(RK) of Babylon;
her whole land will be disgraced(RL)
    and her slain will all lie fallen within her.(RM)
48 Then heaven and earth and all that is in them
    will shout(RN) for joy over Babylon,
for out of the north(RO)
    destroyers(RP) will attack her,”
declares the Lord.

49 “Babylon must fall because of Israel’s slain,
    just as the slain in all the earth
    have fallen because of Babylon.(RQ)
50 You who have escaped the sword,
    leave(RR) and do not linger!
Remember(RS) the Lord in a distant land,(RT)
    and call to mind Jerusalem.”

51 “We are disgraced,(RU)
    for we have been insulted
    and shame covers our faces,
because foreigners have entered
    the holy places of the Lord’s house.”(RV)

52 “But days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will punish her idols,(RW)
and throughout her land
    the wounded will groan.(RX)
53 Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens(RY)
    and fortifies her lofty stronghold,
    I will send destroyers(RZ) against her,”
declares the Lord.

54 “The sound of a cry(SA) comes from Babylon,
    the sound of great destruction(SB)
    from the land of the Babylonians.[ab]
55 The Lord will destroy Babylon;
    he will silence(SC) her noisy din.
Waves(SD) of enemies will rage like great waters;
    the roar of their voices will resound.
56 A destroyer(SE) will come against Babylon;
    her warriors will be captured,
    and their bows will be broken.(SF)
For the Lord is a God of retribution;
    he will repay(SG) in full.
57 I will make her officials(SH) and wise(SI) men drunk,(SJ)
    her governors, officers and warriors as well;
they will sleep(SK) forever and not awake,”
    declares the King,(SL) whose name is the Lord Almighty.

58 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Babylon’s thick wall(SM) will be leveled
    and her high gates(SN) set on fire;
the peoples(SO) exhaust(SP) themselves for nothing,
    the nations’ labor is only fuel for the flames.”(SQ)

59 This is the message Jeremiah the prophet gave to the staff officer Seraiah son of Neriah,(SR) the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with Zedekiah(SS) king of Judah in the fourth(ST) year of his reign. 60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll(SU) about all the disasters that would come upon Babylon—all that had been recorded concerning Babylon. 61 He said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud. 62 Then say, ‘Lord, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither people nor animals will live in it; it will be desolate(SV) forever.’ 63 When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates.(SW) 64 Then say, ‘So will Babylon sink to rise no more(SX) because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people(SY) will fall.’”(SZ)
