⁷ I warned your ancestors unceasingly from the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt even to this day: obey my voice. ⁸ But they did not listen or obey. They each walked in the stubbornness of their evil hearts, till I brought upon them all the threats of this covenant which they had failed to observe as I commanded them.^(A)

²¹ Thus says the Lord: As you love your lives, take care not to carry burdens on the sabbath, to bring them in through the gates of Jerusalem.^{(A) 22} Bring no burden from your homes on the sabbath. Do no work whatever, but keep holy the sabbath day, as I commanded your ancestors,^{(B) 23} though they did not listen or give ear, but stiffened their necks so they could not hear or take correction.^(C)
