And it shall be that when they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you are to tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“Those destined (A)for death, to death;
And those destined for the sword, to the sword;
And those destined for famine, to famine;
And those destined for captivity, to captivity.”’

And I will (B)appoint over them four kinds of doom,” declares the Lord: “the sword to kill, the (C)dogs to drag away, and the (D)birds of the sky and the animals of the earth to devour and destroy. I will (E)make them an object of terror among all the kingdoms of the earth because of (F)Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

“Indeed, who will have (G)pity on you, Jerusalem,
Or who will (H)mourn for you,
Or who will turn aside to ask about your welfare?
You who have (I)forsaken Me,” declares the Lord,
“You keep (J)going backward.
So I will (K)stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
I am (L)tired of relenting!
I will (M)winnow them with a winnowing fork
At the gates of the land;
I will (N)bereave them of children, I will destroy My people;
(O)They did not [a]repent of their ways.
Their (P)widows will be more numerous before Me
Than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them, against the mother of a young man,
A (Q)destroyer at noon;
I will suddenly bring down on her
Shock and horror.
She who (R)gave birth to seven sons withers away;
[b]Her breathing is labored.
Her (S)sun has set while it was still day;
She has been (T)shamed and humiliated.
So I will (U)turn over their survivors to the sword
Before their enemies,” declares the Lord.

10 (V)Woe to me, my mother, that you have given birth to me
As a (W)man of strife and a man of contention to all the land!
I have not (X)lent, nor have people lent money to me,
Yet everyone curses me.
11 The Lord said, “I will certainly (Y)set you free for purposes of good;
I will certainly make the (Z)enemy plead with you
In a time of disaster and a time of distress.

12 “Can anyone smash iron,
(AA)Iron from the north, or bronze?
13 I will give your (AB)wealth and your treasures
As plunder (AC)without cost,
For all your sins
And within all your borders.
14 Then I will make your enemies bring your possessions
Into a (AD)land that you do not know;
For a (AE)fire has been kindled in My anger,
And it will burn upon you.”

Jeremiah’s Prayer and God’s Answer

15 (AF)You know, Lord;
Remember me, take notice of me,
And (AG)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;
Know that (AH)for Your sake I endure reproach.
16 Your words were found and I (AI)ate them,
And Your (AJ)words became a joy to me and the delight of my heart;
For I have been (AK)called by Your name,
Lord God of armies.
17 I (AL)did not sit in a circle of revelers and celebrate.
Because of Your hand upon me I sat (AM)alone,
For You (AN)filled me with indignation.
18 Why has my pain been endless
And my (AO)wound incurable, refusing to be healed?
Will You indeed be to me (AP)like a deceptive stream
With water that is unreliable?

19 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:
(AQ)If you return, then I will restore you—
(AR)You will stand before Me;
And (AS)if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become [c]My spokesman.
They, for their part, may turn to you,
But as for you, you are not to turn to them.
20 Then I will (AT)make you to this people
A fortified wall of bronze;
And though they fight against you,
They will not prevail over you;
For (AU)I am with you to save you
And rescue you,” declares the Lord.
21 “So I will (AV)rescue you from the hand of the wicked,
And I will (AW)redeem you from the [d]grasp of the violent.”

17 this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Behold, I am sending upon them the (A)sword, famine, and plague; and I will make them like (B)rotten figs that cannot be eaten due to rottenness. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with plague; and I will (C)make them an object of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a (D)curse and an object of horror and [a](E)hissing, and a disgrace among all the nations where I have driven them, 19 because they have (F)not listened to My words,’ declares the Lord, ‘which I sent to them again and again by (G)My servants the prophets; but you did not listen,’ declares the Lord. 20 ‘You, therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles, whom I have (H)sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are (I)prophesying to you falsely in My name: “Behold, I am going to hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will kill them before your eyes. 22 Because of them a (J)curse will be [b]used by all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon, saying, ‘May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon (K)roasted in the fire,’ 23 because they (L)acted [c]foolishly in Israel, and (M)committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and falsely (N)spoke words in My name which I did not command them. I am He who (O)knows, and a witness,” declares the Lord.’”

24 Now you shall speak to (P)Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, 25 “This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Because you have sent (Q)letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and to (R)the priest Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests, saying, 26 “The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to be the [d](S)overseer of the house of the Lord for every (T)insane person who (U)prophesies, to (V)put him in the stocks and in the iron collar. 27 So now, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of (W)Anathoth who prophesies to you, 28 seeing that he has (X)sent word to us in Babylon, saying, ‘[e]The exile will be (Y)long; (Z)build houses and live in them, and plant gardens and eat their [f]produce’?”’”

29 Now (AA)Zephaniah the priest read this letter [g]to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 31 “Send word to (AB)all the exiles, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says concerning (AC)Shemaiah the Nehelamite: “Because Shemaiah has (AD)prophesied to you, although I did not send him, and he has (AE)made you trust in a lie,” 32 therefore this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (AF)punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his [h]descendants; he will (AG)not have anyone living among this people, (AH)and he will not see the good that I am going to do for My people,” declares the Lord, “because he has (AI)spoken falsely against the Lord.”’”

17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(A) against them and I will make them like figs(B) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(C) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[a](D) and an object of horror,(E) of scorn(F) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(G) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(H) by my servants the prophets.(I) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.

20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(J) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(K) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(L) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(M) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(N) it and am a witness(O) to it,” declares the Lord.

Message to Shemaiah

24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(P) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(Q) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(R) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(S) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(T) Therefore build(U) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”

29 Zephaniah(V) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(W) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(X) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(Y) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(Z) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(AA) against me.’”
