The Righteous Branch

23 “Woe to the shepherds(A) who are destroying and scattering(B) the sheep of my pasture!”(C) declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds(D) who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock(E) and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil(F) you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant(G) of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture,(H) where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds(I) over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid(J) or terrified, nor will any be missing,(K)” declares the Lord.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch,(L)
a King(M) who will reign(N) wisely
and do what is just and right(O) in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.(P)
This is the name(Q) by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.(R)

“So then, the days are coming,”(S) declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’(T) but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”(U)

  1. Jeremiah 23:5 Or up from David’s line

23 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.

And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.

And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the Lord.

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.

Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;

But, The Lord liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.

14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise(A) I made to the people of Israel and Judah.

15 “‘In those days and at that time
    I will make a righteous(B) Branch(C) sprout from David’s line;(D)
he will do what is just and right in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved(E)

This is the name by which it[a] will be called:(G)

17 For this is what the Lord says: ‘David will never fail(I) to have a man to sit on the throne of Israel, 18 nor will the Levitical(J) priests(K) ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices.(L)’”

19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day(M) and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time,(N) 21 then my covenant(O) with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites(P) who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.(Q) 22 I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless(R) as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’”

23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms[b](S) he chose’? So they despise(T) my people and no longer regard them as a nation.(U) 25 This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not made my covenant with day and night(V) and established the laws(W) of heaven and earth,(X) 26 then I will reject(Y) the descendants of Jacob(Z) and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes[c](AA) and have compassion(AB) on them.’”

  3. Jeremiah 33:26 Or will bring them back from captivity

14 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.

15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.

17 For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.

19 And the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, saying,

20 Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;

21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,

24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lord hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.

25 Thus saith the Lord; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;

26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

27 “The days are coming,”(A) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(B) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(C) over them to uproot(D) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(E) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(F) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(G) have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(H)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(I) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(J)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(K)
    I made with their ancestors(L)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,(M)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(N) to[a] them,[b]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(O)
and write it on their hearts.(P)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(Q)
34 No longer will they teach(R) their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(S) me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(T) their wickedness
and will remember their sins(U) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(V) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(W)
who stirs up the sea(X)
    so that its waves roar(Y)
the Lord Almighty is his name:(Z)
36 “Only if these decrees(AA) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(AB) ever cease
    being a nation before me.”

37 This is what the Lord says:

“Only if the heavens above can be measured(AC)
and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(AD) all the descendants of Israel
because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.

38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(AE) for me from the Tower of Hananel(AF) to the Corner Gate.(AG) 39 The measuring line(AH) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(AI) where dead bodies(AJ) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(AK) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(AL) will be holy(AM) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

  2. Jeremiah 31:32 Or was their master

27 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.

28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

35 Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name:

36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

37 Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.

38 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.

39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.

40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the Lord; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
