Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, “Drink wine.”

But they said, “We will drink no wine, for (A)Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink (B)no wine, you nor your sons, forever. You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor have any of these; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, (C)that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners.’

Then I set bowls full of wine and some cups before the Rekabites and said to them, “Drink some wine.”

But they replied, “We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jehonadab[a](A) son of Rekab gave us this command: ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine.(B) Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents.(C) Then you will live a long time in the land(D) where you are nomads.’
