11-12 When disaster comes, the Lord will tell you people of Jerusalem,

“I am sending a windstorm
from the desert—
    not a welcome breeze.[a]
And it will sweep you away
    as punishment for your sins.

  1. 4.11,12 a welcome breeze: Hebrew “a wind to blow away the husks.” Farmers used a special shovel to pitch grain and husks into the air. Wind would blow away the light husks, and the grain would fall back to the ground, where it could be gathered up.

10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(A) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(B) when the sword is at our throats!”

11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(C) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(D) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(E) against them.”
