Jeremiah 4:6-8

⁶Head for Jerusalem
or another walled town!’

“Jeremiah, tell them I'm sending
    disaster from the north.
⁷An army will come out,
    like a lion from its den.
It will destroy nations
and leave your towns empty
    and in ruins.”

⁸Then I told the people
    of Israel,
“Put on sackcloth!^[a]
    Mourn and cry out,
‘The Lord is still angry
    with us.’ ”

4.8 sackcloth: A rough, dark-colored cloth made from goat or camel hair and used to make grain sacks. It was worn in times of trouble or sorrow.

Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster^(B) from the north,^(C)
even terrible destruction.”

⁷A lion^(D) has come out of his lair;^(E)
    a destroyer^(F) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
    to lay waste^(G) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins^(H)
    without inhabitant.
⁸So put on sackcloth,^(I)
    lament^(J) and wail,
for the fierce anger^(K) of the Lord
    has not turned away from us.
