Run! Turn back! Lie low,
residents of Dedan,(A)
for I will bring Esau’s calamity on him(B)
at the time I punish him.(C)
If grape harvesters came to you,
wouldn’t they leave a few grapes?(D)
Were thieves to come in the night,
they would destroy only what they wanted.(E)
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
I will uncover his secret places.(F)
He will try to hide,(G) but he will be unable.
His descendants will be destroyed
along with his relatives and neighbors.
He will exist no longer.(H)
11 Abandon your fatherless; I will preserve them;
let your widows trust in me.(I)

12 For this is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too. 13 For by myself I have sworn”(J)—this is the Lord’s declaration—“Bozrah[a] will become a desolation, a disgrace, a ruin, and an example for cursing, and all its surrounding cities will become ruins forever.”(K)

14 I have heard an envoy from the Lord;
a messenger has been sent among the nations:
Assemble yourselves to come against her.
Rise up for war!

15 I will certainly make you insignificant among the nations,
despised among humanity.
16 As to the terror you cause,[b]
your arrogant heart has deceived you.
You who live in the clefts of the rock,[c]
you who occupy the mountain summit,
though you elevate your nest like the eagles,
even from there I will bring you down.
This is the Lord’s declaration.(L)

17 “Edom will become a desolation. Everyone who passes by her will be appalled and scoff because of all her wounds.(M) 18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,”(N) says the Lord, “no one will live there; no human being will stay in it even temporarily.(O)

19 “Look, it will be like a lion coming from the thickets[d] of the Jordan to the watered grazing land.(P) I will chase Edom away from her land in a flash. I will appoint whoever is chosen for her. For who is like me?(Q) Who will issue me a summons?(R) Who is the shepherd who can stand against me?” (S)

20 Therefore, hear the plans that the Lord has drawn up against Edom and the strategies he has devised against the people of Teman:(T) The flock’s little lambs will certainly be dragged away,(U) and their grazing land will be made desolate because of them.(V) 21 At the sound of their fall the earth will quake;(W) the sound of her cry will be heard at the Red Sea.(X) 22 Look! It will be like an eagle soaring upward, then swooping down and spreading its wings over Bozrah. In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman with contractions.(Y)

Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,(A)
    you who live in Dedan,(B)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
    at the time when I punish him.
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
    I will uncover his hiding places,(C)
    so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
    also his allies and neighbors,
    so there is no one(D) to say,
11 ‘Leave your fatherless children;(E) I will keep them alive.
    Your widows(F) too can depend on me.’”

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup(G) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?(H) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear(I) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah(J) will become a ruin and a curse,[a] an object of horror(K) and reproach;(L) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”(M)

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;
    an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
    Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,
    despised by mankind.
16 The terror you inspire
    and the pride(N) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,(O)
    who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest(P) as high as the eagle’s,
    from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror;(Q)
    all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
    because of all its wounds.(R)
18 As Sodom(S) and Gomorrah(T) were overthrown,
    along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell(U) in it.

19 “Like a lion(V) coming up from Jordan’s thickets(W)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like(X) me and who can challenge me?(Y)
    And what shepherd(Z) can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,(AA)
    what he has purposed(AB) against those who live in Teman:(AC)
The young of the flock(AD) will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.(AE)
21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;(AF)
    their cry(AG) will resound to the Red Sea.[b]
22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop(AH) down,
    spreading its wings over Bozrah.(AI)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors(AJ)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(AK)

  1. Jeremiah 49:13 That is, its name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that it is cursed.
  2. Jeremiah 49:21 Or the Sea of Reeds

Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.

If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.

10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.

11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

12 For thus saith the Lord; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.

13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

14 I have heard a rumour from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.

15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.

16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.

17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

20 Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.

22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

Judgment against Edom

12 “‘This is what the Lord God says: Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah(A) and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them, 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off both people and animals from it. I will make it a wasteland; they will fall by the sword from Teman to Dedan. 14 I will take my vengeance(B) on Edom through my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to my anger and wrath. So they will know my vengeance. This is the declaration of the Lord God.

12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom(A) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, 13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand(B) against Edom and kill both man and beast.(C) I will lay it waste, and from Teman(D) to Dedan(E) they will fall by the sword.(F) 14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger(G) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”(H)

12 Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.

14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God.
