¹⁷ “Behold, ^(A)happy is the person whom God disciplines,
So do not reject the ^(B)discipline of ^[a]the Almighty.
¹⁸ For ^(C)He inflicts pain, and ^[b]gives relief;
He wounds, but His hands also heal.
¹⁹ In six troubles ^(D)He will save you;
Even in seven, ^(E)evil will not touch you.
²⁰ In ^(F)famine He will redeem you from death,
And ^(G)in war, from the power of the sword.
²¹ You will be ^(H)hidden ^[c]from the scourge of the tongue,
^(I)And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes.
²² You will ^(J)laugh at violence and hunger,
^(K)And you will not be afraid of ^[d]wild animals.
²³ For you will be in league with the stones of the field,
And ^(L)the animals of the field will be at peace with you.
²⁴ You will know that your ^(M)tent is secure,
For you will visit your home and ^[e]have nothing missing.
²⁵ You will also know that your ^[f](N)descendants will be many,
And ^(O)your offspring as the grass of the earth.
²⁶ You will ^(P)come to the grave at a ripe age,
Like the stacking of grain in its season.
²⁷ Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

¹³ “^(A)If you would ^(B)direct your heart rightly
And ^(C)spread out your hands to Him,
¹⁴ If wrongdoing is in your hand, ^(D)put it far away,
And do not let malice dwell in your tents;
¹⁵ Then, indeed, you could ^(E)lift up your face without moral blemish,
And you would be firmly established and ^(F)not fear.
¹⁶ For you would ^(G)forget your trouble;
Like ^(H)waters that have passed by, you would remember it.
¹⁷ Your ^[a]life would ^[b]be ^(I)brighter than noonday;
Darkness would be like the morning.
¹⁸ Then you would trust, because there is hope;
And you would look around and rest securely.
¹⁹ You would ^(J)lie down and none would disturb you,
And many would ^[c](K)flatter you.
²⁰ But the ^(L)eyes of the wicked will fail,
And ^[d]there will ^(M)be no escape for them;
And their ^(N)hope is ^[e](O)to breathe their last.”
