29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop[a](A) and held it up to His mouth.

30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”(B) Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.(C)

Jesus’ Side Pierced

31 Since it was the preparation day,(D) the Jews did not want the bodies(E) to remain on the cross(F) on the Sabbath(G) (for that Sabbath was a special[b] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.(H)

29 A jar of wine vinegar(A) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(B) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(C) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(D) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
