²³ “You are from below,” He told them, “I am from above.^(A) You are of this world;^(B) I am not of this world.^(C)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father.^(A) Having loved His own who were in the world,^(B) He loved them to the end.^[a]

¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen^(A) you out of it, the world hates you.

³⁶ “My kingdom^(A) is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If My kingdom were of this world,^(B) My servants^[a](C) would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here.”^[b](D)

¹⁰ I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy^(A) and swindlers^(B) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.^(C)

¹⁶ For everything that belongs to^[a] the world—the lust of the flesh,^(A) the lust of the eyes,^(B) and the pride^(C) in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world.

⁵ They are from the world.^(A) Therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.
