20 For it was Yahweh that hardened their hearts,[a] to meet Israel in war in order to utterly destroy them without mercy, that they would destroy them just as Yahweh commanded Moses.
21 At that time Joshua came and exterminated the Anakites from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 None of the Anakites were left in the land of the Israelites;[b] some remained only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

20 For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts(A) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(B)
21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites(C) from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir(D) and Anab,(E) from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns. 22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza,(F) Gath(G) and Ashdod(H) did any survive.
