The men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them [a]from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the descent, so the (A)hearts of the people melted and became as water.

Then Joshua (B)tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and (C)they put dust on their heads. Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord [b]God, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing [c]to dwell beyond the Jordan!

Then Joshua tore his clothes(C) and fell facedown(D) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(E) The elders of Israel(F) did the same, and sprinkled dust(G) on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why(H) did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?(I) If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
