¹⁴ So in the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which ^(A)the Lord selects by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the Lord selects shall come forward by households, and the household which the Lord selects shall come forward man by man. ¹⁵ And ^(B)it shall be that the one who is selected with the things designated for destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has violated the covenant of the Lord, and because he ^(C)has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

The Sin of Achan

¹⁶ So Joshua got up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by ^[a]tribes, and the tribe of Judah was selected. ¹⁷ So he brought the family of Judah forward, and he selected the family of the Zerahites; then he brought the family of the Zerahites forward man by man, and Zabdi was selected. ¹⁸ And he brought his household forward man by man; and ^(D)Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected.

²⁰ So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel forward; and the tribe of Benjamin was selected by lot. ²¹ Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin forward by its families, and the Matrite family was selected by lot. And Saul the son of Kish was selected by lot; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.

⁴¹ Therefore, Saul said to the Lord, the God of Israel, “^(A)Give a ^[a]perfect lot.” And Jonathan and Saul were selected by lot, but the people ^[b]were exonerated. ⁴² Then Saul said, “Cast lots between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was selected by lot.

²³ So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and ^(A)Matthias. ²⁴ And they ^(B)prayed and said, “You, Lord, who ^(C)know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen ²⁵ to ^[a]occupy ^(D)this ministry and ^(E)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶ And they ^[b](F)drew lots for them, and the lot fell ^[c]to ^(G)Matthias; and he was added to ^(H)the eleven apostles.
