⁵ Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. ⁶ The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him^(A) so that he tore the lion apart^(B) with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.

³⁴ But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion^(A) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, ³⁵ I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized^(B) it by its hair, struck it and killed it. ³⁶ Your servant has killed both the lion^(C) and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. ³⁷ The Lord who rescued^(D) me from the paw of the lion^(E) and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with^(F) you.”

²² My God sent his angel,^(A) and he shut the mouths of the lions.^(B) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.^(C) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
