The [a]power of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves (A)the dens which were in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. For whenever Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the [b]people of the east and [c]march against them. So they would camp against them and (B)destroy the produce of the earth [d]as far as Gaza, and (C)leave no sustenance in Israel, nor a sheep, ox, or donkey.

Because the power of Midian was so oppressive,(A) the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves(B) and strongholds.(C) Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites(D) and other eastern peoples(E) invaded the country. They camped on the land and ruined the crops(F) all the way to Gaza(G) and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys.
