²² Then Holofernes said to her, “God has done well to send you ahead of the people, to strengthen our hands and bring destruction on those who have despised my lord.^(A)

¹¹ But all who lived in the whole region showed contempt for the summons of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, and refused to join him in the war, for they were not afraid of him but regarded him as only one man.^[a] So they sent back his messengers empty-handed and in disgrace.^(A)
