The Mission of the Seventy-Two[a] After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. Luke 10:1 The number of those sent suggests universality, since the ancient leaders of Israel traditionally numbered seventy-two (see Num 11:24-29), and seventy-two pagan nations were listed (see Gen 10). In this passage, Luke brings together various recommendations of Jesus in order to draw up a program for the missionaries.
