49 For this reason also, (A)the wisdom of God said, ‘(B)I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will [a]persecute, 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed (C)since the foundation of the world, may be charged [b]against this generation, 51 from (D)the blood of Abel to (E)the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged [c]against this generation.’ 52 Woe to you [d](F)lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; (G)you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects, 54 (H)plotting against Him (I)to catch [e]Him in something He might say.

49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(A) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(B) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(C) to the blood of Zechariah,(D) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(E)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(F)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(G)
