⁴ “I tell you, my friends,^(A) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.

¹² When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. ¹³ Say you are my sister,^(A) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

² and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.^(A)” Then Abimelek^(B) king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.^(C)

¹¹ Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God^(A) in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’^(B)

⁷ When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,^(A)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

⁴² Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.^(A) But because of the Pharisees^(B) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;^{(C) 43} for they loved human praise^(D) more than praise from God.^(E)
