Jesus Teaches and Heals

17 Jesus and the apostles ·came down from the mountain [L came down; C perhaps to a level place on the side of the mountain], and he stood on level ground. A ·large group [great crowd] of his ·followers [disciples] was there, as well as many people from all around Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast cities of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They all came to hear Jesus teach and to be healed of their ·sicknesses [diseases], and he healed those who were troubled by ·evil [defiling; L unclean; 4:33] spirits. 19 All the people were trying to touch Jesus, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

20 Jesus looked at his ·followers [disciples] and said,

“·You people who are poor are blessed [or Blessed are you…; C and so through v. 22],
because the kingdom of God ·belongs to you [is yours].
21 You people who are now hungry are blessed,
because you will be ·satisfied [filled].
You people who are now ·crying [weeping] are blessed,
because you will ·laugh with joy [L laugh].

22 “·You are blessed [T Blessed are you; or God will bless you] when people hate you, ·shut you out [exclude/ostracize you], ·insult [mock] you, and ·say you are [L scorn/curse/defame your name as] evil because ·you follow [L of] the Son of Man. 23 ·Be full of joy [L Rejoice and leap] at that time, because you have a great reward in heaven. [L For] Their ancestors did the same things to the prophets [2 Chr. 36:16].

24 “But ·how terrible it will be for [L woe to] you who are rich,
because you have ·had your easy life [L already received your comfort/consolation].
25 ·How terrible it will be for [L Woe to] you who are ·full [well-fed] now,
    because you will be hungry.
·How terrible it will be for [L Woe to] you who are laughing now,
because you will ·be sad and cry [mourn and weep].

26 “·How terrible [L Woe to you] when everyone ·says only good things [speaks well] about you, because their ancestors ·said the same things about [L did the same things to] the false prophets.

24 The ·news [fame] about Jesus spread ·all over [or as far as] Syria, and people brought all the sick to him. They were suffering from different kinds of diseases. Some were in great pain, some ·had demons [were demon-possessed], some were epileptics, and some were paralyzed. Jesus healed all of them. 25 ·Many people [Great crowds] from Galilee, the ·Ten Towns [L Decapolis; C the area east of Lake Galilee that once had ten main towns], Jerusalem, Judea, and ·the land across [beyond] the Jordan River followed him.

Jesus Teaches the People

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on ·a hill [the mountain] and sat down. His ·followers [disciples] ·came to [gathered around] him, and he began to teach them, saying:

“·They are blessed [or Blessed are those…; C and so through v. 10] who ·realize their spiritual poverty [L are the poor in spirit],
for the kingdom of heaven ·belongs to them [is theirs].
They are blessed who ·grieve [mourn],
for ·God will comfort them [L they will be comforted; C the passive verb implies God as subject].
They are blessed who are ·humble [meek; gentle],
for ·the whole earth will be theirs [L they shall inherit the earth; Ps. 37:11].
They are blessed who hunger and thirst after ·justice [righteousness],
for they will be ·satisfied [filled].
They are blessed who show mercy to others,
for ·God will show mercy to them [L they will be shown mercy; C the passive verb implies God as subject].
They are blessed ·whose thoughts are pure [or whose hearts are pure; T the pure in heart],
    for they will see God.
They are blessed who work for peace [T Blessed are the peacemakers],
for they will be called God’s ·children [or sons].
10 They are blessed who are persecuted for ·doing good [doing what’s right; L the sake of righteousness],
for the kingdom of heaven ·belongs to them [is theirs].

11 “·You are blessed [T Blessed are you; or God will bless you] when people ·insult [mock; abuse; revile] you and ·hurt [persecute] you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things ·about [against] you because ·you follow [L of] me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because you have a great reward in heaven. ·People did the same evil things to [L They likewise persecuted] the prophets who lived before you.

Mark 3:7-13 Expanded Bible (EXB)

Many People Follow Jesus

Jesus left with his ·followers [disciples] for the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed him. Also many people came from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea [C located to the south], from the lands across the Jordan River, and from the area of Tyre and Sidon [C located to the north]. When they heard what Jesus was doing, many people came to him. When Jesus saw the crowds, he told his ·followers [disciples] to get a boat ready for him to keep people from ·crowding against [crushing] him. 10 He had healed many people, so all the sick were pushing toward him to touch him. 11 When ·evil [defiling; L unclean; see 1:23] spirits [within people] saw Jesus, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12 But Jesus strongly ·warned [rebuked; ordered] them not to tell who he was.
