Blessings and Woes^(A)

¹⁷He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,^(B) ¹⁸who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, ¹⁹and the people all tried to touch him,^(C) because power was coming from him and healing them all.^(D)

²⁰Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.^(E)
²¹Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.^(F)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.^(G)
²²Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you^(H) and insult you^(I)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.^(J)

²³“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,^(K) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.^(L)

²⁴“But woe to you who are rich,^(M)
    for you have already received your comfort.^(N)
²⁵Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.^(O)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.^(P)
²⁶Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.^(Q)

⁶Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.^(J)
⁷Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.^(K)
⁸Blessed are the pure in heart,^(L)
    for they will see God.^(M)
⁹Blessed are the peacemakers,^(N)
    for they will be called children of God.^(O)
¹⁰Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,^(P)
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(Q)

¹¹“Blessed are you when people insult you,^(R) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.^(S) ¹²Rejoice and be glad,^(T) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.^(U)

Crowds Follow Jesus^(A)

⁷Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.^(B) ⁸When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.^(C) ⁹Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. ¹⁰For he had healed many,^(D) so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.^(E) ¹¹Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”^(F) ¹²But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.^(G)
