3 A voice of one crying out in the wilderness:(A)
Prepare the way for the Lord;(B)
make His paths straight!(C)[a]
4 John came baptizing[b](D) in the wilderness(E) and preaching a baptism of repentance[c](F) for the forgiveness(G) of sins.(H) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem(I) were flocking to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan(J) River as they confessed(K) their sins.(L)

3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[a](A)
4 And so John the Baptist(B) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(C) for the forgiveness of sins.(D) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
