“A shout goes up in the desert: Make way for the Lord! Clear a straight path for him!”

John the Baptizer appeared in the desert. He was announcing a baptism of repentance, to forgive sins. The whole of Judaea, and everyone who lived in Jerusalem, went out to him; they confessed their sins and were baptized by him in the river Jordan.

“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”[a](A)

And so John the Baptist(B) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(C) for the forgiveness of sins.(D) The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
