³Jesus asked them, “What does the Law of Moses say about this?”

⁴^(A) They answered, “Moses allows a man to write out divorce papers and send his wife away.”

⁵Jesus replied, “Moses gave you this law because you are so heartless.

³“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

⁴They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”^(A)

⁵“It was because your hearts were hard^(B) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied.
