Jesus Prays in Gethsemane (A)

32 They came to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to His followers, “You sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter and James and John with Him. He began to have much sorrow and a heavy heart. 34 He said to them, “My soul is very sad. My soul is so full of sorrow I am ready to die. You stay here and watch.” 35 He went a little farther and got down with His face on the ground. He prayed that this time of suffering might pass from Him if it could. 36 He said, “Father, You can do all things. Take away what must happen to Me. Even so, not what I want, but what You want.”

37 Then Jesus came to the followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not be tempted. Man’s spirit wants to do this, but the body does not have the power to do it.”

39 Again Jesus went away and prayed saying the same words. 40 He came back and found them sleeping again. Their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to Him. 41 He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! Listen, the time has come when the Son of Man will be handed over to sinners. 42 Get up and let us go. See! The man who will hand Me over to the head religious leader is near.”

Gethsemane(A)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(B) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(C) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(D) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[a] Father,”(E) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(F) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(G)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(H) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(I)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(J) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Prays in the Garden (A)

39 Jesus came out of the room. Then He went to the Mount of Olives as He had been doing. The followers went with Him. 40 When He got there, He said to them, “Pray that you will not be tempted.” 41 He walked away from them about as far as a stone can be thrown. There He got down with His face on the ground and prayed. 42 He said, “Father, if it can be done, take away what must happen to Me. Even so, not what I want, but what You want.” 43 An angel from heaven came and gave Him strength. 44 His heart was much troubled and He prayed all the more. Water ran from His face like blood and fell to the ground.

45 When Jesus got up after praying, He went back to the followers. He found them sleeping because of so much sorrow. 46 He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not be tempted.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(A)

39 Jesus went out as usual(B) to the Mount of Olives,(C) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(D) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(E) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(F) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(G) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(H) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(I)
